Just curious, why are you running premium in the bike?

most high perfomance bikes, cars and whatnot.... require a high octane to reduce pinging and to keep optimum performance and economy

I spent a day at Magic Mountain yesterday, and driving there and back in my 28 mile per gallon family car cost me $100 (I topped off the tank before I left: $60 and then topped off again when I got back home: $40).

This is crazy. :thud:

If it makes you feel any better, it costs me about $200 to drive to my parents house and back :yikes:

fill up when I leave, uses a full tank to get there and back, plus the driving around I do.  :gap:  Fill up when I get back.  :smack:

Baja runs dry as Americans fuel up on cheap gasoline

TIJUANA – Demand from U.S. motorists for Mexican gasoline is straining supplies in Baja California.
Over the weekend, some stations began to limit the sale of diesel to $100 per customer. Other stations ran out of diesel as well as premium gas.

All gasoline in Mexico is produced by the national oil monopoly Pemex and sold at franchise stations. A gallon of regular unleaded (87 octane) sells for $2.54, premium (91 octane) for $3.19, and diesel for $2.20. Prices are low in Mexico because the government heavily subsidizes gasoline.

I would argue that today's cars use aggressive timing curves which can take advantage of the slower more stable burn of a higher octane fuel, which in return will produce better efficiency with better fuel.

Older computer controlled systems, such as the 22R-E, does not have the ability increase it's own efficiency when higher octane fuel is used. In this case, there is no benefit, for an example if you will, in running 100 oct. vs 90 oct. in a 22R-E unless you carry a 12mm wrench and a timing gun with you every time you fill up and manually adjust your timing to compensate depending on the quality of the gas currently in the fuel tank.

A new vehicle can run a full tank of 85 oct. and then run a full tank of 91 oct. back-to-back without detonating or pinging. The new systems are  continuously monitoring feedback from engine sensors (such as the O2 and knock sensor(s)) and have a very, very wide range of timing adjustments that are done on the fly, whereas older EFI systems have a static timing set with a narrow window of internal timing adjustments that cannot pickup the slack from a bad tank of gas.

:yesnod: I am going to set my rebuilt engine up to run on premium when I drop it in. I figure that the extra 20 cents or whatever a gallon will only add a couple bucks to each fill up, but I will be able to make more power using the different timing premium allows me to run.

I just tell them to put in $50 when I need it.  That way I won't know what the actual damage to the wallet would be.

With the barrel price averaging in the $135 range, it's nice to see the pump price isn't going up on a weekly basis.  But they are just getting us used to the higher prices, so they can do this again next year.  We've been paying $4.39 a gallon, but at the Fred Meyer/Kroger pumps is $4.38 and with the club card it's $4.28.

I don't even want to see what it's gonna cost us to go to Redding in August!  :yikes:
