I don't know, give me a good ole classic Chev, and I won't mind the gas mileage.  I remember dad bitching when he had to fill both saddle tanks in his 78, and it took all of a $20 bill!!  :o

If I was to find a old rig like that, I would look for a newer trans to put behind them.  And regear.  My dad had a 85 3/4 ton, 350, 4 spd, 2wd with 4.10's, and got 14 mpg no matter loaded or unloaded.  If he had 5 gear he probably could have gained 2-3 more mpg.  The newer 5.3 are getting an average of 18-20 mpg behind a auto.  A buddy got 22 in his, on freeway driving.

Many years ago I got 11 mpg on a 3500 mile trip with that Chevy. Never could fill it for $20 if it was near empty, even 37 years ago when I bought it. Three tanks and I once put in just over 50 gallons. An overdrive transmission would help -- a Duramax would help more, but it's not in the cards.

Yeah, BIL bought a 3/4 Ford a while back, and I had to tow a car for a buddy.  Yeah, a 460 with a 4 spd.  I could pass anything but a gas station.  I didn't want to figure up the gas mileage.

turbo this..

id not complain about 2 bucks a gallon.. if its converted to gallons here its over $5.5 a gallon!! we have to pay about $1.5 per liter (3.78liters per gallon)

this is why modern turbo diesel has taken off in Australia as most of them get over a thousand kms per tank or 620 miles from about 15or16 gallons

we dream about filling up for 32 bucks and getting a thousand kms that whould be like going back 40 years when it was like 50 cents a liter

BigMike

turbo this..,

As for me, despite having fuel prices lower than some parts of the world, I complain because of reasons such as diesel being higher priced even though there is less work to produce it and if you've ever seen a gas price heat map of the US (example) you'll see extreme differences where you can pay $4/gal at one pump and then go across the street to a pump in a different state and pay $2.50/gal. It just makes it so annoying, and the fact that I live in probably the worst state of them all, California, doesn't help :gap:

I visit Japan about once a year and gas prices are as you describe there too. To make it worse, speed limits are far lower, there is more traffic, they have highway tolls, and it takes forever to get around by car, so much so that there are websites advising foreigners against getting a car (for example see the "Don't get a car!" section here). But, as we don't have any sort of a mass transportation here in the US save only a hand full of cities, we have no choice but to drive and that sucks but is also very fun :driving:

It isn't uncommon for people here to go on 5,000+ mile (8,800 km) road trips. Even Rock Crawlers. Marlin has driven the Crawler Truck back when it was carbureted with 35" BFG Mud Terrains from California to Tennessee, 4,900 mile (7,900 km) round trip, 1,047:1 Triple Marlin Crawler Transfer Case System and all, and he has done this three times now (almost 15,000 miles/23,700 km). Also my friend took his Suzuki Samurai with 33" tires and stock 1.3-liter carb'd engine from California->Orlando->New York->Chicago->Seattle->and back, basically a complete loop of the country, which must have been darn near 7,500 miles (12,000 km). I imagine in Australia you guys have nice long stretches of open highway (I've seen Mad Max ) but over in Japan when I tell them I drive 300 miles (480 km) every weekend to my apartment in the south bay area they imagine this taking more than a one day journey by car. Without the fantastic rail system they have, I couldn't see them managing by car at upwards to $7/gallon :o

BigMike

Now headed down again 2.89.9, what's with the .9 anyways? Why not just round it up .1 it would make it easier to see that the pump is accurate or not....   oh now I get it.

Nearly three weeks ago I posted our local price of $3.859 (cash only). A few days later it began dropping and is currently at $3.379, still high compared to many other places but a relief around here.

The shell I fuel up at is $2.87, and the 76 across the street is still $3.09  :haha:

Its fun to check out your local metro gas prices online.  Here is a link to Portland, OR. http://www.portlandgasprices.com/  As of 11/24/14 they vary from 2.75 to 3.60ish.  I can't believe there is one selling for 3.89, when you go a half mile, and get it for a dollar less.

But on the coast I'm paying 3.06.

Exactly!  You can go back through my posts from years past and see that I've said they're training us to think gas is cheap when it's expensive.  Raise the price high, drop it a little and morons say "gas is cheap!", raise it more and drop it a little again, etc.  Wondering if we'll actually see gas fall to around $2 a gallon at some point before it skyrockets back up.  Time to invest any money you can spare in oil!

I agree......they are also training you to accept a gas tax increase.  The justification is to rebuild crumbling infrastructure.

Yes, and now that more people are driving more fuel-efficient vehicles , fuel tax revenues are decreasing. Aside from fuel tax increases, which many people naturally oppose, there are experiments in taxing miles driven, which may be a much sneakier way of Hoovering your wallet. Not to mention you will be punished for reducing your fuel consumption, which we have been told for decades is a worthy goal.

yeah, and when you purchase a "gross polluter" you pay a tax up front... then you pay a tax on all of the fuel you buy for it.. double dippin SOBs
