IFS is gone!! 3.0 Killer on 1 tons

Well, I was planning on putting the gears in the 60 on friday, but i've hit a snag.  My dumb ass never pair close enough attention, the carrier I'm swapping out was a posi carrier, so the spiders that I was going to reuse won't work in the new carrier.  Gonna go to some dline shops and see if I can track down some standard spider gears.

I'm sure I can find some, might just go to PnP tommorow, track some down.  

I've also been told that the posi carrier doesn't follow the carrier break that the regular carriers do, and that I may be able to use it with the 5.13 gears.  I'm trying to confirm that online right now.

Spent some time at PnP this morning, got the spider gears I needed and a couple of extra rear shafts, just in case.    Spent some time today cleaning up the brakes, and getting them ready for tommorow.  A buddy is supposed to come by and help me install the gears, if all goes will, the truck will be back on 4 wheels tommorow

I still haven't hacked out the IFS. 

I'm hoping after tommorow the only thing left I'll have to do on the rear is hook up the brake lines.

$30 a pop.  Coulda been better, coulda been worse.  I figured doesn't hurt to have spares, and I was having a little issue on ID ing the axle as a Dana 60 or 61, so I figured as long as the axles fit the spiders, I should be good to go (no problems after all, everything matched up perfectly.)


Got me a Dana 60 front!!    Outta a chevy K30.

the shafts should be the same im almost sure. its the gears/casing that are a little different. 3.07 or 3.55s.
thats cool you got that front. the little extra money your going to spend was the money you were gunna spend fixing the broken front, trust me. so figure all the times you were going to break in the future, you just about got rid of.

they turned out to be, but at the time I wasn't sure.   

Here's some updated progress pics, axle didn't get hung, gears didn't get installed, but I got a ton of stuff cleaned up and painted, and welded the perches on the rear end.

Thats it for now.  Brought my brakes into work, gonna put them all together, and hopefully get the rear end buttoned up for the most part on wed.

What little I've looked into, I think I'm going to swap them out.  Not positive yet though.  Of course with the dually hubs, I could run the Hummer wheels w/o recentering them  

I haven't done anything other than unload that rear axle, we were trying to get the rear done as much as possible.  

Right now I'm looking for some diagrams for the brake assembly.  The springs were mostly rusted apart, and I'm not sure where some of them go.

Could use a hand here.  I've got some diagrams, but they're not exactly clear on this.  The brakes were in real bad shape, some of the springs and such were rusted and broken or just flat out missing.  Can someone give me a tip on how these brakes look, and what to do with the rest of the pieces?  I haven't done much with domestic drum brakes before.

Thats the diagram matt sent me.  It helped a lot, but I can't tell where some of the stuff goes/is, because its not blown apart.

So it's the ford.... front or rear? Sorry, I'm kinda jumpin in the middle of the stream on this one. I know there are more diagrams, just not sure about the application.

Rear.  From a '79 or '81 F250  (Can't remember which)  It was in a truck with the "Snowfighter" or "Snowtrooper" package.

You are still missing parts.  that diagram is pretty close as pretty much all of the big 3 had the same drum brake assembly just different sizes of shoes.  You need the little metal ratcheting thingy (technical talk ) that goes on the adjuster as shown in the diagram.  The small cable loops around the half moon on the backside of the parking brake lever and down to it from there.  The other springs attach just like the diagram shows.  The horshoe clip goes on after the ratcheting piece.  That pin in the lower right shoe is where the ratchet goes and the clip is slid over the pin and you crimp the ends closed with pliers.


Personally I'd take that near $100 worth of drum stuff back and go disc if you don't need a parking brake..

need/want the parking brake.  I'll pick the stuff up an PnP tommorow  thanks a lot!!  

I'm going with single wheel stuff.  I could stick with it, since I've got the H1 beadlocks, but going single wheel, I'll lose almost 10" of width, making me wide, but not too wide for some of the trails around here.

Yeah, the PO of the axle cut the ebrake cables at the drum.  I'm going to PnP tommorow to get a new cable.

Have you figured out what master you are going with yet?  how about the brake lines?  This is all still fresh in my mind from my swap a few months ago if you need any idea's/pointers....

I'm going to reccenter the H1s, with about 4" of backspacing.  

I just did this last night, but for the life of me, I can't remember the exact measurements, but these are pretty close, unless I'm doing something totally wrong

Rear is 65" WMS-WMS+recentered H1s 4"BS= 77"

Got a GM master, already in the truck.  Brake lines I'm getting from the Rockbrawlers, toy-gm lines.  I've got the adapters for the master cylinder to toy brake lines already.
