What kind of plug do yous guys use?
« on: Apr 03, 2006, 11:10:38 PM »
I just changed out my plugs today and I have a better idle but less power. I was wondering if there is a better brand to use or what?
I have msd wires, a blaster coil, cold air intake. What gap should I use? I have them gaped to the haynes book spec. .32 or something like that. The old plugs were ngk type r. the new ones are denzos. not the irridum ones. just the regular ones.

with the msd you can gap your plugs to like .045 to take advantage of it.  If you don't you really won't notice any difference with all that new electronics.  I use NGK always

NGKs are the poop for toyotas. They were sometimes stock, other times densos were stock. Both good companies.

NGK here.

About two or three weeks after I bought my truck I did the normal replacing of plugs, wires, fluids, etc. and found autolite plugs.  When I switched to NGK I noticed an increase in power.

The plugs my truck has liked the most so far are the bosch platinum + 2 plugs.  I keep track of my mileage, and actually picked up 1-2 mpg with those over the regular platinums, and the truck didn't like ngk.

I agree. The Bosch platinums worked great in my truck for about 10k, then they ran horribly. NGK's last 30k easily & run well throughout thier life. I gap mine 4 thou over stock, seem to run better that way.

It's not so much having multiple sparks as it is the path of least resistance.  You only have one path on an average plug, but on a splitfire, plus 2/4 you have more options.  You can take 3 engines with equal wear and setups, run the same plugs and get different results with each.  It's just the nature of the beast, different engines of the same make/model will not necessarily work the same with similar components.  I think anybody who wrenches for a living has seen this before :yesnod:

I've seen motors that have ran splitfire type plugs in them, and the pistons have holes burned through them.  Have any of you had this!  I lnow alot of mechanics that have said they will never run these type of plugs!  And what's with the +1 or 2?  I run basic normal NGK plugs on my nissan, anything else runs like crap!

I know the spark will jump the shortest path, but how is that to your advantage?
It would be the same as gapping your single-electrode slightly less. As I said it can increase life by having the spark switch which electrode it usually jumps to as they wear down, but the gain wouldn't tend to offset initial cost. IMO those types of plugs are gimmicks... am I in for some highly technical explanation as to why I'm wrong?

Gimmick or not, as I previously stated I have proven it to myself!  No sense in getting too technical, if it works I do it.  If you don't "think" it will work for you, then you will not be open minded enough to acknowledge a difference if it does.  Like I said, different engines like different setups.  You say potatoe, I say PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE :rofl2:
