I would just put good parts into it, keep it stock, maybe a dif cam if you want power at dif rpms. A free flowing exhaust will help top end at the expense of bottom end. K and N air filters dont belong on 4x4s IMO.

Stock is going to be most reliable, and all the bolt ons you can do to it wont amount to much.

for cheap good power an 85 re head with spherical heads. dome tops with a crawler cam pace setter header 3 angle port and polish there is a lot you can do and keep it reliable.

just make sure you dont mill the head more than needed to make it smooth.  milling it just for the helluvit will cut your power if too much is removed.

don't bore the block over .040 inch because pistons get very expensive.

porting works but dont let just anybody do it.

get a  cam from LCEngineering if you want power, if you dont get one from Engnbldr.

LcEngineering 4 into 1 long tube header into 2 1/4 inch exhaust into a free flowing muffler.

an 85 22R/RE head does NOT have hemispherical combustion chambers.
nobody makes a domed piston for a 84 and newer block because the head wouldnt  even sit down on the headgasket.  I wont even go into the pacesetter crappy header or the "3 angle port and polish"  :shake:

was this an attempt at sarcasm??

turbo is a lot more headache than it is worth on these engines......

just do a cam header, and intake, if you want more than that, you want to look into an engine swap

having the headers ,free flow exhaust  and an intake is good gains, 10% here 8% there really adds up for these little engines add a cam and expect another 5%,I installed LC eng. ceramic coated headers their cat back and cat delete K&N intake and RV cam in my 93' and felt a whole lot more bottom and mid range gains... good bolt on power for a stock engine.

Cam is the only thing that will make a 'significant' difference. But even there it's not that dramatic. I'd keep it stock, as someone said, and start saving for a 3RZ. By the time your drop a couple grand to get 25 extra HP out of the 22R/E you could have bought a new engine ;)  I've put LCE headers, 32/36 and then 38 Webber, 2 1/4 open exhaust, oppenhauser intake, K&N filter and, in retrospect, none of it was worth the money. The 38 Webber did have the nicest power delivery, but it drank like a fish ;)

Depending how much you want to spend, look into a Engnblder head, with the larger valves.

And don't look into turbos, not worth it.  To setup a turbo motor right, you could do a 3RZ swap way cheaper, or have at least 2 fully rebuilt 22R's sitting on the floor waiting for you to blow the one your driving.  I took out a 22RTE and out in a 22RE in my truck.  It was gonna cost me 3X's as much to rebuilt the turbo motor, than it was for me to do a 22RE.

yah, like cheesemaker said turbos are more of a cool factor less you have deeeep pockets... i love my 86 turbo but its more cool than powerful. i dont plan on spending $ on the engine more on suspension and dual cases... all that bolt on stuff works well for the 22re but i think the 3rz swap would be mo bettah!!!!

yeah well i guess ill stick to the 22r because i have 2 of them ha ha maybe if i get board in the future ill go get a wrx turbo and see if i can rig it but probably not save the money for a propane kit. and i would do the upgraded head but i just got a head that's like new and it just got resurfaced and a valve job

If your serious about a turbo later on, check this site out.  http://www.22rte-trucks.com/simplemachinesforum/  When I got my truck, I wanted to keep it all stock, but just cruising the forum, to make them work with upgraded parts, takes alot of mods, and money.  So, I decided to just go with a 22RE instead.  Several people on here have "tried" to build up 22RTE's, only to sell off the motor at a serious loss.

:rofl2:  it kills me how so many people will put tons of money into exhaust  and air filters and everything and then install a RV cam.  :wall:   no wonder it didnt show more top end and mid range :tantrum:  ITS NOT A RV

Having driven my old 22re stock for awhile I found that on a certain hill I drive over almost daily I could only get it to rev up to 4000 rpm in third gear then it just wouldn't pull any more. When I did the timing chain I threw a cheap comp cams 268 cam (I think) now over the same hill it will pull up past 4500 but thats about as far as I'll push it. The change is hardly dramatic but it's something.

You can do a relatively simple power build for about $700(rebuild kit and O/S valve head) + block machine work.  A buddy went this route a few years ago using Engine Builder parts along with a Webber carb.  It was a definitely night and day difference, rather than pulling mountain grades in 3rd(37's & 5.29's), he could pull them in 5th, or 4th when loaded down with camping gear.
