what are some easy ways to increase power on a 22re.  I'm gonna put headers on it, but I want to do more than that.  I noticed those little breather thingys on the valve covers of a lot of motors, including toyotas.  are they just for looks or do they increase a little power?  I am going to run my toyota on a stock cat and a glasspack. I am also going to get a cold air intake kit for it, but is there anything I am missing that is fairly cheap to do?  :turtle:

First off, "performance" with a 22re is an oxymoron. Header & larger exhaust will help quite a bit. The breather thing & the cold air intake I would pass on if you are going to get anywhere near the water. A better cam is another thing to consider installing.

simple stuff like cleaning fuel injectors works good and new high grade plugs and wires. You might also try a aftermarket distributor. Run premium gas even with the high costs

I added downey header and air filter got a huge Gain   would suggest Hi flow cat too

if you're not satisfied at all with your R engine performance, you probably never will be.  if it was in a celica, there's a lot you can do to make these engines rev all day long and perform great, but not a whole lot for a 4x4.  however, i love my 22R and it does all i need.  never owned anything but a 4 cylinder though...

no, I love 4 cylinders.  I was just wanting a little bit more power, if I could get it ( a little extra power never hurt anyone :driving:  :driving: )  I doubt I will get very close to any water ( have had too much bad luck with  motors and water) :smack:  :headscratch:

Power from a 22R = GEARING . It don't matter what you do to the motor if your not getting it to the ground.
That's the biggest improvement you can make to a toyota is gears. Most people drive around with 38's and stock gears and then wonder why they don't have any power. That's my  :twocents:

For simple mods I would  suggest a Header, open filter like K&N , TRD stage 1 cam, 2 inch exhaust( in my ipinion you go bigger than that with only those mods you loose low end), Double or single chamber flow, and if you can get away with it take out the CAT, or get a High Flow. I pulled mine off a while ago and just had to put it back on for smog. What a difference didn't really know it when I took it off. But once I put it back on I lost alot of power.  :flamer:

easy stuff:
K&N air filter
header,   HP cat,   nice cat-back kit
upgrade ignition
high test < assOlean

tricks:
block of the EGR valve  ( plug vac line)
trick the air flow meter  to change the  air/fuel %  ( pull off black cover  the one with the sillycone)

hard stuff:
HP head
cam
ported intake   ( or just clean the dam thing out)
bore cyl
injectors   ( send out /clean)   or just get new ones

when I was doing smogs years ago there was a tool that snap-on had that you could put in line between the O2 sensor and the puter. it would let you "adjust." the O2 reading rich or lean. if  there is still some thing like this out there ya could just put it in place and adjust the mix rich or lean on the road.
rather than brake open your air flow meter. :dunno:

the tool was to be used to see if the puter would compenceat for the mix being wrong.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

removing the EGR valve won't give you any more power, and can cause your engine to run hot especially if its a lean running engine like a 22RE anyway.  not to mention you'll get worse gas mileage when cruising.

the most noticeable improvements will be a cam and head work.  all the power is in the head with these engines -- why do you think there' so many more powerful 4 cylinders out there?
