22re question
« on: Feb 03, 2008, 12:06:26 PM »
i have a 22re with the high compression head and it is bored .040 over with high compression flat top pistons, is it still a 2.4 liter, or did boreing it over make it a 2.5 liter?

the 2.4 is a measure of displacement.  To measure the displacement, find the area of the cylinder at Bottom Dead Center ( BDC), where the piston is lowest in the block, then find the area of the cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC), where the piston is highest in the block.  Subtract the area at TDC from the area at BDC to find the area displaced by the full movement of the piston, hence displacement.  Finally, multiply the displacement of that cylinder by the number of cylinders in the block.

area of a cylinder = 3.14 * Radius^2 * Height

Well let's see:

-Stock 22r/re bore and stroke: 92mmx89mm
-Bored .040 22r/re bore and stroke is 93.016mmx89mm (.040in is 1.016mm)

Plugging these numbers into this calculator: http://www.race-cars.net/calculators/displacement_calculator.html , we get:

-Stock 22re 92x89 bore/stroke: 144cu, 2.37L (Toyota says it's 2.4, but it seems manufacturers round their numbers frequently. Ex: the 302cu Ford they call a 5L, and the 304cu Jeep is also called a 5L. Not a huge difference in cubes, but I doubt either of these engines are exactly 5 Liters)

-Bored 22re 93.016x89 bore/stroke: 148cu, 2.42L

So it looks like you gained about 4 cubes, but it's still a 2.4L. These numbers may not be dead on, but it gives a good approximation, obviously.
