22RE cam spacer question?

Looking for some help again.  I have a early 1985 SR5 pickup that I replaced the engine in. When I pulled the stock one apart there was no camshaft to drive chain spacer like the book called for so I got one and installed it. Now I have to have the distributor turned all the way one direction to time it. Does anyone know if Toyota ever built a motor without one?

Sounds like you're a tooth off with the distributor.

Remove, rotate rotor slightly, reinstall.

Did you align the distributor/rotor correctly when you installed it, i.e timing marks at 5*BTDC for efi, or 0* BTDC for carb, making sure the #1 valves are loose(just like when you adjust the valves), with the rotor pointing straight up and the distributor adjustment range centered on the bolt hole?  When you slide the dist. in, the rotor should rotate about 45*(10:30 if it was a clock) counter clockwise.  Doing it this way will almost guarantee the engine to start on, then time it with the vacuum lines plugged.

measure the gear on the old one from where it touches spacer to tip of gear then do the same on the other one.

@ tdc on compression stroke, dizzy gear should be pointing at 11:45ish

you could be 180* out on the dizzy.  43*btdc is where it might be trying to run right now.
