Could be...  I think it is in a good spot.  I could have gone about another inch forward. 
i put mine as far forward as it would go without major cutting of the body mount

Here is a close up in case anyone doesn't understand what I did.  I found several articles/threads about drilling these shear pins out to lengthen the shaft, but no actual pictures...  So here is a closer pic. :woohoo:
i put mine in a vise then using a 2 foot 3/8 extension inside the slip part and drove it out,  worked much easier than what it sounds like you did

also i found out when i removed my tilt column (just didnt need it) and re installed the old 79 column that i gained a inch of column length, i think this is because the 79 had that rag thing at the box :dunno:  so i have a lower section from a 83 truck, and the upper section from the 79,
