The Project Depression Rehab Thread
« on: Aug 07, 2007, 06:46:11 PM »
I decided to start this thread because I cannot seem for the life of me to get myself motivated to finish working on my truck.

Three weekends ago I thought I could finish my RV2 onboard air system, and on Sunday, all I could manage to do was make jigs for my brackets. Wasted the whole day.

That week I thought I could build the bracket and then install the compressor on the weekend, and all I managed to do the entire week was just build a little sleeve to convert a Ford pulley (which is only 5" in diameter ) onto the RV2 compressor.

Then on Sunday, two weeks ago, I was supposed to build the brackets and install the compressor, but instead I helped my friend at the wrecking yard to pull a 1st gen cab. Another wasted weekend.

Then on my way home two weeks ago, I found out that I had a blown head gasket on my engine. I figured that's ok, I'll just fix it the following weekend, which was last Sunday.

So last Sunday comes around, and I had scheduled the entire day to replace my head gasket. I woke up at 7am as planned, but managed to stay home until about 10am when I suddenly became tired and wound up sleeping until nearly 4pm.

Well, there is a run at Swamp lake this weekend that I signed up to help install toilets for the forest service, and now it is already Tuesday evening, I left work today tired, and I didn't even want to touch my truck.

So I think I will stay home this weekend and try to do the head gasket.

MAN why cant I just get motivated arrrggggg its really ticking me off! :shudder: :shudder: :shudder: :shudder: :hammer:  :willynilly: :help:

So anyways, if you feel like me and you can not get the motivation to finish your projects, then post up. I've somehow gotta get my stuff finished before the round up and I've got a bunch more stuff to do so I thought a nice support thread like this is in order  :yesnod:   :disturbed:  :clap2: :cheese: :therethere:

Dude, I feel ya.  That's how I normally am, and now I'm helping build an FJ40, so my stuff only gets a little thought before my head hits the pillow.  Nights like tonight, when I am not wrenching on that, I am waiting on parts, so I can't work on my rig.

If you are like me, it's cause you spend seemingly endless hours working on it, and nothing ever really gets fixed.

Do what I did and give up on working on everybody Else's junk and work on your own.

Find a woman that will push you into getting stuff done.

Just get off your dead ass and get busy.

You only have 4 weeks left before MCR6 and you are going even if I have to drag your junk up there.

Stop wasting time reading the Making Of The Willy Mammoth and maybe you won't be so depressed.

 :ack:

I know the feeling BigMike, lately everytime I work on the rig it takes me 20x as long as it should to get ANYTHING done. When I did my disc brake converion on the 14 bolt I spent 6 hours trying to extract a BLEEDER VALVE!

And I fugged it up so bad I had to buy another caliper because I couldn't even get the machine shop to pull it out after I had busted a hardened easy out inside.

Frustrating to say the least!

Mike, I know all too well the lack of motivation.  9 times out of 10 I'm the only guy who's willing to stay at work late and it's totally draining, especially going to work at 11am and getting off well after it gets dark.  To make matters worse, I got the flu on my days off last week and haven't even begun to get better.  Probably doesn't help that I got stuck working late 4 of 5 days too   I have no motivation whatsoever to even move right now and am already considering calling in sick when I'm due back in thursday.  I NEED to pull the engine in my 4by and get crackin on it :whip:

Soooooo......... atleast you're not sick too

x2 I even put off working on my stuff to help people do little things to theirs, and tell myself that it will motivate me to get to work. :bull crap:
After work I don't feel like doing anything. I am going to be/ have been doing some work to my bosses Jeep on the clock this week, so maybe I will start working on my truck after work.

Hey,if anyone knows how you all feel it's me  :acclaim: .I kicked ass on my project at first(considering I would only work on it on saturdays)and now that it's 97% finished I haven't worked on it.I got bummed out when I painted it and had someone who was gonna repaint it for me but he had to finish another truck for me first and he's been lagging and that's kinda put me at a pause.

I know what you mean.  I try to work on my truck, and I'm sooo close, that it should have been done last month.  But between family, yard/home care and working swingshift, I have no motivation!  And I got to have my truck running and broke in by september!  For you Mike, it must be the heat!  That would slow me down!

Maybe you should tell the wife to leave you alone for a weekend!  Or have her :moon: :whip: and not in the bedroom!

I got burned out on wheeling and wrenching (both as a job and hobby) back in nov/dec   ive since moved into my parents house  and have basicly leeched off them since because i havent had the passion or drive to do  the thing i love.  I havent seen my truck since december or have i wanted to.. i know a bit about project depression.  Atleast you have the ability to do somthing about/to your truck.  I have no car nor any money to go work on my project.   Suck it up and get your junk fixed.  Im trying too.

heres a perfect example for putting off your project. i have the new u bolts so i can install the add-a-aleaf in my 4runner, have the skin for the soft top, and the mounting brackets (i just need to make the frame and cut the material). simple stuff, would take me a couple hours and i would no longer need the hard top and could sell it. i put it off today, and for the past 3 hours have been working on installing the cooling system upgrade in my dads 95 gmc yukon with the 6.5L turbo diesel. simple work on my 4runner, or much more in depth work on my dads yukon. on the good side, i've gotten everything torn off of the 6.5L, cleaned the radiator, and flushed the engine within 2 1/2 hours. took me 30 minutes to find 1 stupid little bolt that i dropped under the intake manifold and injection pump :slap: . should be another 2-2 1/2 hours until its up and running with no more cooling problems.

I  have these same problems...I have about $4000 worth of parts sitting in a big stack in the garage to build my project, but The most I've done is clean up the front housing and I'm starting to put it back together. I work second shift, 4pm-2:30am, so I sleep till about 10am then it seems like there just isn't enough time to do anything so it keeps getting put off.

BigMike, it's time for a wrench-a-thon.  Read all those comments about people working hard on other people's stuff... you need to call up some of your buddies, order some pizza, and watch the work happen.  Half the fun of wheelin is hangin out with all your friends anyway.

X2 the earlier comment about making a list also.

Here's some motivation...just imagine how it would feel to have to go to MCR6 and not have your rig there while everyone else is there with there rigs and having a good time . Then think how much you wish you had just fixed your junk in enough time to be there having a good time with everyone else  :maddest:. Or how everyone there will razz your  :moon: about your rig not being there   :thpst:. Oh the shame of it all!  :smack:

Let's see now who will have something to say..........

Seriously though,
the easiest way to get going is to set goals for what you want done by the end of the day (realistic goals of course) and try to surpass them if possible. Do the same the next day and the day after. Before you know it you'll have everyday planned for something to do from a list of things that need to be done. Then you'll have the momentum again. Sure easier said than done but hey, you already know the alternative, right? (see above) Don't think I won't say something if your junk isn't there... :gap:

Hope this helps... :joke:

I don't have any friends who know how to help out!

That's not a problem, I never have anyone helping me anyways. Maybe 5% of my automotive projects have included help from another.

Regarding getting remotivated, that's what this thread is for! And its working! I am going to tear into my truck tonight! :woohoo:
