IC's linked 88 on fodees Saturn 1.9l engine swap
« on: Dec 06, 2007, 10:22:44 AM »
So last year as a good chunk of you had saw i built a truggy out of my old white truck, Wheeled it, broke it  bad ( broke the frame.. bent the 12bolt hardcore, broke a shaft  and exploded my timing chain guides)  and scrapped it.. I ended up getting another truck for like 400 bucks and my quad

It was an 88  EFI shortbed with a cabswap to a xtra cab. real clean truck really   Came with the engine  and tranny and a custom tcase xmember.  but no axles and no tcases.   I started to work on it  till about november/dec of last year and i got really burnt out on 4 wheel drives.. Just got tired of building  breaking and rebuilding  or changing to where i liked somthing. So i pretty much wiped my hands clean of it and it sat like this

till  just about 2 weeks ago.  Yep so burnt out i didnt even look at it for a year =(

So anyway fast forward  from last year  im back at it ive decided to finish it!.

Heres how she sits in my driveway right now

Just a couple specs and things that need to be installed

10bolt front 5.13 gears and welded diff
FF14bolt rear 5.13's and welded converted to 6 lug and disk brakes
Custom 3rd gen toyota rears up front
Double triangulated 4 link rear  with 1/4 eliptical spring setup
Dual cases with Marlin MC07 adapter
40" TSL's on Enki aluminum wheels

So basicly all i have left to do is move 2 mounts on my rear link setup, weld the upper frame mounts on , mount the springs and shocks and done !

put my cases together groove my tires.

Build some drivelines bob my bed  do my rear brakes and im ready to rock :D  cant wait.    More to follow when it stops raining and i can get some more work done =)

See you guys in the hills

Hehe  feels good to work on stuff again.  should have my junk together within 2-3 weeks if everything goes right ( which it wont but heres to wishful thinking!)

Anywho i finnaly got my welder and torches  over to my house so i can start workin

Got the ass end back up in the air  im tryin to figure out where i want my ride height  at. I generally like it to be a little low in the back  due to i HATE going down hills  and a low rearend is A-OK in my book.  Hows about here look ?  this is with my 38.5's on it not my 40s   Also those front fenders are not cut and  is about 4-5" taller than that 4 runner behind it which has 6" of lift and 35's

what are the plans on the link setup? I am assuming you are moving the inner link mounts on the axle...or building a whole new truss..that one looks pretty weak

aye  the  uppers got moved today to the middle.. and the truss needs to be braced but its made out of 1/4"  2 1/2" tubing  so its plenty strong.

duals are done..

what a chore  with minimal tools ( no snapring pliers and no bearing puller..).. 1st time ive ever done it without any help from someone that has put them together before so  :crossed:

not much left to do..  i ran out of steel so i couldnt finish the rear suspension today but tomarrow it will be done.. so all that is left then is little crap  for the most part like brakes, drivelines, bob the bed.. yadda yadda  i say maybe another week and a half if i can get ahold of another 10bolt front

rear suspension is done   just need to finish welding everything and weld on 2 shock tabs.  then its off to  modify my front shackles a bit  get the cases bolted up and get a rear driveline made and hopefully i'll have my brakes soon so i can start that mess =(

I ended up having to use the coils i had ( stock front tj coils)  since the way i have my links setup there was just no good way to run my 1/4 eliptical pack =(  i would have much rather ran those over the coils but.. do whatcha gotta do.

Yes i do know the spring pad looks angled a bit and the spring is bowed but they are like that to compensate for my pinion needing to be rotated up. I left the pinion flat so that when my buddy comes to measure for my driveshaft we can set the angle accordingly which will make the springs sit correctly =P

Do you have any close ups of your spring pad?  From here it looks a bit scary, but it coudld be the pic, looks like a flat plate welded to a piece of tube  welded to the frame?  It would be a real good idea to build something more HD..   Again maybe its just the pic?

for the most part what it is but i took those pics before i added some bracing ;)  pretty much nothing is fully welded right now since it was getting dark so..

but if  you are thinking that is a bit scary you should have seen my old trucks rear suspension lol.. it was definitely one of a kind

the uppers were welded to the lowers for an effective 2 link setup with no panhard. it had no side to side movement and minimal flex steer. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE WORKED  but it did and it did beautifully

LOL cool, you should put some more pics up...  Maybe as a suggestion for your rear perches you can get a piece of 4" od pipe weld your circular pad you have cut out to the bottom.....   Im not sure how your attaching the spring but probably a clamp... Then you can drill your center hole, weld in a grade 8 nut, notch the whole assembly and weld it to the frame...  This could be done with square tubing also.  But atleast it would have a real strong base...  Again no offence intended,  just watchin out for ya...

on the uppers they are captured in by basicly screwing in the spring    and the bottom is a  weld on spring perch drilled out for a 3/4" bolt and i basicly made a huge washer to clamp down the spring.  as for that piece of round tubing as a spacer  its a piece of 2" .250 wall DOM i dont think anything is going to happen to it ;)   but i see what you are saying.

Im not to worried about it going anywhere that *spacer* is only about 3" long and ive seen some rigs using some that were upwards of 10" with no bracing.  Theres really no force being put on them  except for up and down  since the coils are captured.  The axle is very minimaly moving forward and backwards  with  double triangulated 4 link  and theres no side to side movement.
