Drive line advice/opinions wanted
« on: May 17, 2012, 10:34:04 AM »
situation: 3 link front, will see speeds in excess of 25mph in 4wd (snowy roads, desert romping, etc), mostly rockcrawling. will a stock 84-85 CV handle the droop of a 3link or should i go with a single joint or a $$$ custom high angle driveline? has anyone built a squareshaft good enough to handle 25+ mph or is a balanced shaft a must? thanks for any advice guys. BTW, i do have a budget :P

Just get an ifs cv and clearance it if you need more angle. I just run an old design trail gear front 10" slip driveline and I can go about 45 mph and still have the vibs be bearable

did you have it balanced or did you cut and weld it up yourself?

Find a stocker from a yard and mod it up at a driveline shop, or just order one from Marlin. Square sucks balls in my opinion.

I already got a bunch of stockers. Hey tacorunner, do you use a stock cv on your 4runner with the 3link? Does it bind on full droop?

I say get one from marlin.  Fresno driveline will (NOT) balance any custom front drivelines and you wouldnt want a crappy looking driveline in you rig. If you have the budget then spend it right and get it done right the first tyme unless you have too much  :twocents: you can throw some this way

i have single joints on both ends welded it myself, as long as you keep a close eye on it you can get it super close.... very little to no vibs at speed
Those are some huge welds!

Qiuck run down

Trail gear long spline - 100

Piece of pipe - 40

Double joint - 60

thats 200 plus

Add another 90 if you want driveline to put it together

So if you.......

Add antoher 200 you can get one done by marlin complete with joints and all, ready to put on.

How much did it come out to all said and done? A $500 driveshaft isn't in my budget (I would love to have one though).

HAD built me a rear with just a toyota slipyoke setup for about 150 bucks. i took him my slipyoke he put on the .120 wall tube and a 1350 end for my 14bolt and a new joint. So 150 for a piece of .120wall and a 1350 yoke with a new ujoint for 150 bucks is pretty good. especially for a shaft around 42" long

i would have high angle  build you a drive line from an old rear. i inner sleeved a rear drive shaft for the front, it worked but now the yoke on the t-case side has opened up(were the caps "press" in) enough to scare me so ill be going to jess at HAD soon.

I had my friend who used to work at a shop make my square shaft. He made so many of them they were actually about as balanced as a square shaft can be. I run mine up to 55 mph in the snow. Yeah it produces vibration but its tough as nails. Paid $100 for it. If you have the money spring for a High Angle shaft do it, but if you are looking for cheap and strong go with a square. 25 mph is nothing, people are always surprised how fast I have gone with mine in 4wd.

X2. I had a square front and it did 55 on the highway. Shook above 35. Tough as nails! Ran it for years!

I now have a round front. Paid a bunch for it. Bent it slightly (in like 3 months), it shook above 35. Bent it more (2 months later
:P ), now it shakes above 15 but i've had it to 45.

With long links in the front, you probably wont have an issue with hitting the drive shaft. Id do the round but thats because I'd like to drive it fast :)

With links he wont need a long slip.   Clearanced cv if angles are not crazy and look at a retube and balance.

If you need a CV joint, the first gens net a higher angle than a CV from an IFS rig. The Tacoma or T-100 might have a CV with a decent angle too. Most rigs with link type suspension wont need a long slip.

This was the cheapest d-lines option I could think of with the junk that I have. Used a bunch of slips and some .25" DOM tube. These d-lines are 24" and 25" long and no balance. Good for a trail rig  :beerchug:

I used the marlin longspline kit and took a stock front 85 shaft down to Mike at Drive line service on golden state Blvd. I was just gonna buy the tubing from him for something like $1 an inch and weld it myself. But then he offered to cut and assemble it for another $40.
So this was about $250.  Its not balanced but the tubing was cut true on a lathe and I've had it up to about 50 in 4hi with no vibrations.
Oh and that " dustcover" is a pro crap shock boot I had laying around, it lasted about 5minutes in the rocks.

yup go this route. you don't need along slip driveline a link system is different then leaf springs in the driveline aspect and how it travels and slips. clearance the cv as needed extended the shaft length if needed and then get it balanced. its cheap and easy.
