93 octane really kill my motor?
« on: Jun 19, 2011, 03:29:39 AM »
had my truck in the garage yesterday looking it over compiling my list of tune up parts i need b4 wheeling next weekend.  stopped at the gas station on the way home and decided to treat my p'up to half a tank of 93.  by the time i got home(less than 10 miles) my motor was knocking like you wouldnt believe. immediately drained the gas and filled with 87 octane.  knocking went away a little bit but im sure the motor is toast now. at idle runs smooth, higher rpms knocking for sure.

shop manager at work said it is not a good idea to put 93 in an older, low power motor.  anyone else ever had something like this happen.  motor showed no signs of pending failure, it was actually one of the best running 22re's i have ever owned.   :smack:
Im like Hugh Hefner minus everything good about his life.

octane rating is the resistance to detonation and thats about it. the higher the number the more pressure it can take before combustion on its own

also it burns slower, not much, butt slower. never heard of it hurting a motor

x2 it would make more sense if you usually put 93 and then went to 87. however im unsure on 22re's but the engines ecu will usually change timing if it is having pre ignition or detention problems to try correct it on its own.

Might have gotten bad gas too!
x2 since not a whole lot of people buy higher octane the gas station holding tanks are not turned over as much as the lower octane ratings.

The ethanol draws water too.  When I'm doing road trips, ie Disneyland, Yellowstone, and such, I generally will run Super Unleaded in my van.  It helps a little better for climbing over the passes.  Especially, when I'm loaded with 6 of us, and all our gear.

The higher octane makes for a smother, slower and even burn for higher hp vehicles and does absolutely nothing for a low hp engine. It shouldn't harm the typical automotive engine at all but has been known to distroy small engines like lawn mowers and even some small motorcycle engines.

Think about propane and these 22r's? Its varies in octane amount, but getting some that is 110 octane is not uncommon.

WOW, the octane myth strikes again....

HIGH OCTANE FUEL IS NOT "HIGHER QUALITY"

Octane rating is simply the ability for the fuel to combust under pressure (ping/pre-detonate)

this covers most of it...
http://www.pontiacstreetperformance.com/psp/mythsgas1.html

if you believe that high octane fuel is "better" then you are simply wrong

run the octane that the engine is built for, anything else and you are wasting money.

FYI I run 87 octane in my 460 Ford, no pings at all, has never hurt it and it has over 100,000 to date.

Would be even worse if I had to run 93.

it, as well as the 22R, were designed to run on 87 octane.

93 octane wont hurt anything other than your wallet.   Ethanol will in fact destroy a 22R.  It burns faster than gasoline, sometimes will develop "jelly balls" that will clog a carb jet or a fuel injector in a heart beat.
I have had to completely tear down my carb 4 times in the past year because of these ethanol "jelly balls" clogging it.
I search for pure gas anytime I'm out of my area because it makes my 22r run over 30* hotter and that extra heat causes the oil to become very thin.  The 10% ethanol gets me about 11 mpg and the pure gas about 16.  my nearest station only sells the ethanol free in the 93 octane and on it I'm getting 17.  no power increase but slightly better mileage.

Do you know why any octane gas that is not sold at the pump and is higher like 93 up like av gas or race gas has lead in it. It kills the cat.

When my '94 Toyota with a 22re was new we started getting ethanol "winter gas" in our area to help curb emisions.  As soon as they switched over my fuel ecomomy went from 20 mpg to 13mpg.  I don't see how 93 octane could possibly hurt your engine but I know for a fact these things don't like ethanol one bit.  Sounds like you either got bad gas or it was just a coincidence.
