Dash break Light and battery light
« on: May 08, 2011, 09:57:51 PM »
I have an 83 Toyota that has the break light and battery charge light on the dash always on.  I was wondering if any one knew what might cause this?

There has been a thread on this subject already. Here is some of the banter:  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?action=search2
Check the obvious, fuses, loose connection at the alt, check all grounds including the grounds at the engine and frame, take them off and clean them.
I had the same problem on my 83, turned out to be the main ground on the drivers side, mine was wrapped up with the alternator wires.

Its not the alt.  Mine has been doing this for a while now.  Im pretty sure it has to do with the e brake switch.  If I pull the e brake out then push it back in, it will shut off the lights.  It very well could be the ground causing it but tbh I have the stock voltage gauge and so ill know if theres a problem with the alt.
I might look into it some days soon.  Not really on the top of my list.   Its just a 1st gen bug.

There is nothing wrong with the alt.  I'm not stupid and that doesn't explain the brake light which stays on after the parking break is released smart ass.

Toyota elec sytems in these truks are extremely tempermetal, The brake and charge light will come on when there is any interruption at all, even so much as a small short in your clock, all the way to a bad alt, or fried ecu. Most COMMON cause is a bad alt, Hence why was told its a common prob and you need to bust out your volt meter to find out.

A dumbass wud wnder why when hey have a chagrer hooked up to their bat and they turn it OFF, their brake and chrage light comes on int ehir tuck if its still hooked up, they wudnt know bout tyta elec sytems

They key of this being that if BOTH the BRAKE AND CHARGE light are on together, you have a bad alt, charging issue, or a short

If you have a charging issue the brake light does come on with the charge light, dont' know why but it does every time. As to being able to pull the hand brake and release it to turn both the charge light and brake light that is a short which is why the charge light is on too. Creature83 I don't think anyone is being a "smart ass" on this it is a fact that Toyota's do this when there is an electrial issue with charging. It doesn't help to start calling names when you asked the question and people are giving you an honest answer. For whatever reason when the alt. is not giving the proper charge or there is a short they will come on together.

If you know your alternator/charging system is working then it is probably the relay on the passenger side kick panel. These are notorious for failing. It can be removed without affecting the charging system, but you will lose the ability to tell if there really is a charging issue. I just added a voltmeter which is better than an idiot light anyway. The e-brake light will still function.

That relay is like your appendix- essentially useless while it's in and not noticeable after it's out.

That just makes it where the charge light wont come on if the alternator is bad right?

Check smog stuff, had the same issue, rebuilt carb, a couple random vacume switches and oxygen sensor solved problem.  I was told by an old Toyota mechanic that the brake charge light combo is like a check engine light.

My problem turned out to be the relay.  It just smogged a few month ago.
