4WD Light Not Turning Off on Dash
« on: Feb 11, 2006, 10:38:44 PM »
So I was able to take the truck out and get it dirty and do a few hill climbs and what not today. Pictures later to come in another thread.

NOTE: My 85 EFI 5speed truck unfortunately came with automatic locking hubs. I completely stopped the truck before wheeling it. Put it into 4WH and had some fun. When we were done, I stopped the truck and shifted into 2WH, backed up more than 10 feet to get the hubs to unlock, and then put the truck in 1st to drive away. I noticed that the 4WD light on my dash disappears and then flickers on and off now. I tried getting the light to turn off by putting the transfer case into 4WL, 4Wh, N, and 2WH, each time backing up 10 -20 feet to get the hubs to unlock. The 4WD light keeps flickering when driving down the road in 2WH. I don't feel any extra drag or anything. What do you guys think is the problem? Could it be that the locking hubs won't unlock completely from backing up the truck? Where is the sensor for the 4WD light on the dash and how does it get its signal? Sorry for the newb questions.

My next mod to this truck is to get some Aisin manual locking hubs. So I am already in the process of looking for a set.

the 4wd shift indicator light switch is on the passenger side of the t-case up toards the body you will see two wires going to it  my guess is that the switch is screwed up or there is a short some where first check for any missing insalation on the wires trace the wires as far as you can if that dont give you any thing to work on then you need to replace the switch  the switch has nothing to do with the hubs i belive what turns it on and off are grooves in the shift fork that push a spring loaded switch in and out  so the only problems i can think of are wireing or the switch
good luck

Awesome reply. Thanks. I will look under the truck today to see what I can find. Thanks for the suggestion.

he has auto locking hubs  :yikes:

dude, put it in 2wd and back up turning the wheel left and right till it goes out, dont go back and forth between 2w and 4w  cause that just confuses the poor little hubs

Well I got under the truck and checked to see if the wires stated above were damaged. Everything looked fine, but I disconnected the connector, checked the connections which looked fine, and re-connected them. Then I drove the truck to the store and the light no longer goes on. So it must have been the connector? Oh well, thanks for the help guys!
