light poping sound when turning left and right
« on: Aug 28, 2008, 05:02:53 PM »
So I read some of the previous discussion on this topic but I wanted to get some fresh thoughts. I know my wheel bearings need replacing. I can wiggle the wheel back and forth a descent amount when on a jack.  But when I turn left and right I can hear a light popping sound coming from the hub. And this is in normal driving conditions. Not in 4wd. I have some wheel bearing kits from Marlin on the way. I just wanted to see if anyone has ever had or seen this happen with there rig and the noise was the wheel bearings. Thanks!!!

I thought about that also and I tried to see if it was coming from the box but I'm pretty sure it is the hub area. The only thing else that I can think of is the birfields and if they are completely dry of grease. I have new marfields on the way so I'm doing everything at once when I get my junk in.

it can if the lockouts are damaged. did you order new wheel bearings or a complete knuckle rebuild kit??

you NEED a knuckle rebuild  and make sure you have the same number of shims on the top and bottom of the knuckles

Just wheel bearings. The whole knuckles need to be rebuilt also. I just didn't think about it when I placed my order. When I got this truck it was bone stock. I'm sure they probably havn't been done before. Probably even the wheel bearings.

i'd be willing to bet money your wheel bearings are fine, but the trunion (knuckle bearings top and bottom) are TOAST

i bet it leaks  around the balls  dont it??

Is that behind the knuckle where everything connects to the axle tube? I do know the wheel bearings are bad because I can wiggle the whole wheel back and forth on both sides though. I'm pretty positive at least.

That wiggling you are feeling when you shake the tire can be your trunion (knuckle) bearings as well as wheel bearings. The best way to tell if it is just wheel bearings or if it is trunion (knuckle) bearings as well is to shake it while another person watches the knuckle. If the knuckle moves when you are shaking the tire, then your trunion (knuckle) bearings are shot. If the knuckle doesn't move when you shake the tire, then its just wheel bearings. That being said, I would just do a knuckle rebuild while you have it torn down that far. :twocents:

Unless it's a daily driver, and you gotta get it back together quickly, I'd personally (as me how I know) do a full rebuild. Replace the seals and bearings, repack the birfields etc. You'll kick yourself when in a year or so, the seals blow, and you're having to tear it apart again.

If the trunion bearings are worn out and I cant get to them right away can the knuckle snap off the axle tube?

I dont know. It basically sounds like a creaking leaf spring that we have all hear on these old rigs but I know that it is coming from the steering/wheels.   :headscratch: Is rebuilding the knuckle hard?

That is something I havn't had time to check but I'm gonna try to get try it this weekend. I have to replace one of these crappy tuffcountry rear springs. 1 year and the rear pass side spring went bad. I keep saying I need to learn how to weld and this is one more reason why. So I can put on a quality lift that will last.

rebuilding the knuckes aren't hard, just greasy and time consuming.
