Building RUF's
« on: Dec 29, 2010, 03:46:11 PM »
My biggest question: is there any service I will need to do to the new packs while im rebuilding them?

I have 3" allpro front springs that have settled more on the passenger side then the Driver. I just picked up 2 sets of rear 2wd springs, 1 2nd gen and 1 3rd gen. I was going to use the 2nd gen leafs on the top, chop up the 3rd gen and put them below followed by a few springs from my current pack.

Any opinions or suggestions on this set up?

I just took the time to wire wheel them, inspect visually then paint them. i tried about 3 different combinations of springs on each side until i finally liked how it sat and flexed. so i guess just have fun playing with all the possibilities.

Is it to much to add new Teflon pads (If I can find them) a new centering pin, and bushings? I cant reuse the 2wd centering pin since its to short, could maybe reuse the allpro centering pin. Tried Napa and they dont have any in stock and cant order any that would fit. The Teflon pads are shot and I was just thinking about new 1's wouldnt be a bad thing. As far as the Bushings, they dont look that bad but I figured the same thing as the teflon pads... It couldnt hurt. Now my biggest question is will my current bolts fit with the Rears? I'd hate to find out I need new bolts after I have everything torn apart.

when i did mine i had to make a "washer" and weld it to my front hanger and use a bolt through the front spring eye... as the factory bolt thingy wont fit throught the rear leaf bushings, I dont know if there is any other bushings i could of used but thats what i did...

best pic i got of it... but you get the idea....

as with the teflon pads... personally i wouldnt waste my time as my rufs have more compression (they actually fan apart) than extension and i dont do anything fast.....if its a DD then you might notice less creaks and groans which i do have....

I am kind of a stickler on noises and creaks. Does anyone know where to buy the teflon pads at other than Toyota if they even sell them?

good doner is a 84-88 4x4 truck try to get one from a truck thats pretty straight 88 v6 at the junkyard would be the best probably. newer the better. stay away from runner ones as they tend to be worn out and sag. then you can mix in other rear leafs from a s-10, mazda, ranger or 2/4 wheel yota.

If gathering parts for a 92 for a SAS why would 84-88 truck be the best donor? Can you not use 89-95 rears for RUF? Just learning cause I dont know much about this whole process as of now.

84-88 are 48'' long and the 89+ are 51''. The 48'' don't require moving your front spring hanger approx. 2'' forward.

Between yesterday and today I got them together I used:

1:84/88 2wd rear main leaf
2:84/88 2wd rear 2nd leaf
3:Allpro 3" 3rd leaf
4:89-94 2wd rear main leaf cut down
5:Allpro 3" 4th leaf
6:Allpro 3" 5th leaf
7:Allpro 3" 6th leaf

So far they have moved my axle nearly 2 inches forward giving me a total of 109". I am currently sitting a little higher then I was with just the 3" allpro springs. I am going to ride it for this week and see how they look next week.

I looked this thread over again and sorry if I missed it but is there a measurement difference between the 2x4 and 4x4 rear 84-88 springs? Just curious as I am shopping classified?

I noticed that John Doe used 2x4 springs. Any advantage / disadvantage to running one over the other?
