NO, this is horrible, it can fry the ecu, old school way of checking if the alt works, Just plug a meter into it

well she made it to chico. the throttle sticking was a little rubber boot that got cross eyed and wouldnt let the cable go back. 95% sure the alternator is fine, basically ran it to chico on it. it charges the battery, but the battery only holds enough charge to start for a couple hours. im gonna go get the battery checked sometime this week.

still cant find a good place to ground the one ground wire by the intake manifold. also there are 2 ground wires near the drivers feet fusebox, and if both are grounded, they blow the big 40A fuse under the hood. this is exactly why i hate electrical  :tantrum:

heres a pic of the ground wires. one is white (you can see the actual grounding part in the circle) and the other is the red wire in the circle.

Extend the intake wire and run it to the firewall?

If that other ground wire blows a fuse, maybe it's not a ground wire or whatever it leads to has a short? My pile had a burned wire running from the fuse box straight to a ground point. Why, I have no idea... it was just another thing to fix from the previous owner. :bat: Do you have a real wiring diagram? I may have the factory service manual for an 87; I'll check this weekend... and send that engine brace out too.

the cirlce one bolts right to the kick panel, driver side, right after fuse panel, you should see threaded hole. The red one, clips into its female counterpart, looks just like it. I forget where runs, I canc ehck tomorrow.

I wouldnt be driving it around with the harness not sitting on its spots on back of dash, I dunno, im just scared of vibe, and 1 hole in that thing, and could be a fire nightmare truck killer. If they break off, just zip tie it to em

so im still having problems with this thing.

i got a new battery, mostly under warranty so it was only 15 bucks. it started up after like a day and a half, but now it has to be jumped if its been sitting for a while, again. maybe the alternator isnt charging the battery completely? if the truck has been sitting for a while and i start the truck, the charge and brake light do NOT come on. after a bit of driving they come on again. i havent seen them with the new battery yet though. what the hell ???

also, the fuel and temp gauge used to always work, now they work every once in a while. i dont get it

i'm not sure on the charging issue, but as far as the guages go, did you use the efi guage cluster or are you reusing the carbed cluster?  Mine didn't work when I swapped from carb to efi.  as soon as i put in the efi cluster, they were working again.

What's the battery voltage when it doesn't start? Have you checked?

So if you jump start it things start working again? Assuming you don't have a failed connection. If so, then something is draining the battery and meaning that it is not necessarily the alt not working.

87hillbillyoter

yep, everything works. minus the heater and the clock. those havent worked yet, i still have to figure that out.

Sounds like you need to start disconnecting stuff while you've got a test light hooked between the battery cable and post to see what's draining your battery.

87hillbillyoter

ill see if i can get my hands on a test light. thanks man
