5.29s do have a smaller pinion gear... however, failure of a 5.29 gearset is 99% attributed to poor setup, by inexperienced installers

I am running yukon 5.29 with toyo 35s and I have NEVER had a prob. Well with the gears at least. I have ran ALOT of miles on them on and off road and still running good. I made sure to change my gear lube at 1000 miles to ensure no unusual wear

I like 5.29s for 33" and up tires.  I know 4.88s are stronger but 5.29's aren't really weak either.  I figure if you are going to regear yo might as well set up for any tire you might run since these trucks still do great on milage and drivability with gearing on the low side...

I rockin 410 till I get 488s. Imo the 529s dont work that well for under 37s. At least around here. Dudes are either screaming in 3rd, or bogging in 4th on the hills. While the dudes with 488s are at a good rpm in 3rd up the hills. Somethin must be wrong, casue my 88 runner I just sased, pulls the gay 35x14.5 bias ground hawgs that are on it, at 70 mph, just fine. It accelerates fine and everything, only prob is i gotta drag my clutch a lil more.

i run 4.88's with 37's and my truck feels like stock with 33's on it when i had 35 and 4.88 my speedo was just about dead on and the truck did great, 36 a tad bit slower but when i went to 37's defently felt the difference, i still like the 4.88 becouse i can hold 3rd alot longer than my friends with 5.29's on the hills its leap frog with them sometimes i out pull them sometimes they out pull me.

Quality 5.29 gear set, and set up kit. Have them set up RIGHT by someone you know FOR SURE does them right (marlin, Zuk).  If you set them up yourself make sure you take your time, and get the right tools.  Yota diffs are awesome if set up right. However they are sorta sensitive to set up.

i would say go 488s..me and most all of my buddys have broke at least 1 or 2 sets of 529s..all professionally done too..but we are really really hard on our rigs... so its ur call..i liked the 529s personally but it sucks when the pinion looses a tooth.. we have never broke any 488s yet  :crossed:

I've run 4.88's and my brother has run 5.29's never had trouble with either. I personally liked the feel of the 4.88's I could out run him on the freeway and had no issues offroad.

Broke an axle shaft a couple weeks ago on 38.5 SXs and a Taco E-locked rear. Pulled the third and found seven teeth on the ring gear were half way gone (outer half missing). Pinion looked fine. This is 5.29s.

ZUK even goes so far as to say he believes 5.71s are just as strong as 4.10 gearsets - http://www.gearinstalls.com/410suck.htm

Interesting stuff...

If you want 5.29s, don't worry about the strength. Choose based on what you're doing. If you're gonna highway your whip, calculate to put it in the right RPM bandwidth. Just my thoughts...

I ran both 33's and 35's. My brother ran 33's briefly and mostly 35's it was a little low with the 33's.

interesting post........

for example, with 35 rubber used mainly on trails (nothing too extreme) and up hill climb, what would you reccommend?

4.88 or 5.29

4.88 or 5.29

5.29 would be the closest match to stock with 35's

I"m running 35 x 12.5 x 15's. I have a 22re auto. I do have 4.88's. I wish I had just a little more. 60 is no problem goning flat with a tail wind. I does a lot of shifting out of over drive. it's a constant struggle to keep it at speed. I would certenly recommend 5.29's. and lower gearing only means more control off road. you win twice.
