shackle tech ?
« on: Oct 28, 2006, 08:11:33 AM »
I am trying to make new shackle's for my budget SAS.  How thick should they be, and why? looks like marlins are about 3/8ths.  I cut some from some extra 3/8ths I found laying around, but they seem kinda thick.  They are going to 6in from eye to eye, with 1/2in between the edge of the hole and the edge of the radius on the shackle.

I don't just wanna know what you would build them outa, I wanna know WHY!

TIA

for what it is going to cost to make them your self.(time and money) i would just order some up from marlin. i went the do it your self rout and ended up just ordering a pair. marlins are cheap, proven and wont rust.

3/8 steel would be fine....Why does it seem too thick... I built mine for just the cost of bolts and nuts and have 30 min. of time involved...why buy when you can build?

30mins? :headscratch: ??? Did you use a plasma cutter? Cuz you can't cut 3/8" anything that fast unless you have a major sized bandsaw. I made a set and it took all afternoon with my bandsaw. It took about 30mins for each cut!

steel was free from scrap yard it was 2in wide ...All I had to do was cut to lenth and drill the hole ....I have a friend that owns a machine shop..so cutting it and drilling it was no prob.....guess i shoulda mentioned that :hammer:

I gotcha. I was assuming you were cutting them out of 3/8" plate like I did and I would rather have just bought them for 6$ each when I was done. If you had a 2" wide piece it would be simple.

I guess I am slow because I am at like 45min right now, and I only have them cut out.  I still have to radius them and drill the holes.
oh wait this thread was SHACKLE TECH, not HOW FAST DID I BUILD MY SHACKLE!

What size drill bit is used to drill the holes? I just want to go buy one rather than figure it out if anybody knows already. Thanks.

On mine, one end is 5/8" the other is 9/16"
Get both and you'll be covered.

That is for the johnny joint rear shackles I assume that is why the two are different sized. Thanks Mini
