head gasket leaks

my 22re head gasket is leaking by.  The toy still runs but rough.  My ? is can I just put a new head gasket on and everything be back the way it was, or do i need a new motor

If all that has happened is the HG has failed from age, then yes you can likely get by w/just replacing the gasket.  However if the HG failed from over heating, then you could have warped the head, cracked it, etc.  You wont know the extent of what needs to be done until you pull the head and inspect it.  Which ever is the case, you should stop driving it to avoid causing any further damage to the engine.

If you will be doing the work yourself, this '93 Toyota FSM will help you through the process.

if the temp didnt get into the red it should be ok but i'd have the gasket surface of the head to be smoothed up by a machine shop and use a Toyota gasket or Rock

if you are having the head resurfaced, it is now also a good time for the machine shop to do a valve job, and check the head for leaks

it would also be a good time to install an aftermarket camshaft to liven up the engine a little bit ;)

um ive ordered rock gaskets, and they were fel-pro......
