Dunno about the 4, PAIN IN THE ASS to do on the 6  :headshake:  you're almost better off swapping the entire engine for the amount of work it takes to do the heads.  :hammerhead:

Well, I can tell you're no flat rater!  :P

Watched someone pull the head on an '85 EFI in less than an hour. ( I learned alot that morning)

1st time doing the job, definitely plan out most of your weekend for a 4 cyl.

I can get on done on a 22RE in an evening, but I've done a few.  It shouldn't take you more than a day though.
1986 Toyota 4Runner 22re 5spd transmission and dual transfer cases (4.7’s in the rear). E-lockers front and rear.

2005 GMC Sierra diesel, compound turbo setup to pull.

:werd:  one of those whitout pens, or a silver colored sharpie is handy as well.  With those, you don't have to use the tape

OK, success is in the details. This all pertains to a 4-banger.

Like others said, mark stuff, take pictures. Take bolts from a specific area and put them in labeled zip lock bags.

Have a machine shop that you and others trust lined up to clean and check the head. If it has been surfaced before, bite the bullet and get a new head from Engnbldr. It's just a matter of moving the valve train over. Don't forget to lap the valves!!!

If the head is OK, meaning not warped, you should be fine. But these Toyota motors are picky, if the head has too much material removed, it will raise the compression. Too much can be a bad thing.

Get your gasket kit from Engnbldr. Ted is an honest smart good-to-deal with businessman. You wont' regret it.

Make sure you have the right tools, most importantly a GOOD torque wrench. Torque specs are VERY VERY important. Make sure that every bolt and bolt hole has been chased with a tap or die. Dirty threads cause bad torque readings. Did I mention that torque specs are important? You'll need the usual assortment of sockets, wrenches, scrapers, gasket remover, brake cleaner, rags, allen wrench set, RTV,  ect.

If you are re-using the head, do yourself a favor and go ahead and put heli-coils in the exhaust manifold stud holes. If you don't, I can guarantee you will be after you try and bolt that exhaust manifold back up. It's a LOT easier to do with the head off of the motor.

Watch out for the long cap screw that goes thru the intake. Easy to miss.

The biggest thing is to TAKE YOUR TIME. These engines are an engineering marvel, but they must be worked on with care and attention to detail.  There are a LOT of guys with a TON of knowledge on Toyota engines ( including EB himself) on 4x4Wire.

Be extremely careful to put ever bolt back where it came from and to torque them right and make sure you dont miss ANYTHING!!!!!!!!  Put everything back EXACTLY how it was, or better. A FSM will help. Chilton sucks they just tell you basics about stuff. They wont tell you how to do anything really specific, like doing the timing chain or head gaskets.  This is where the internet comes into play. Good luck
