which head gasket for a 3.0v6?
« on: Nov 02, 2006, 07:09:08 PM »
I need to replace the head gaskets in a 3.0, and I know they have had lost of trouble in the past.  I also understand that I need to replace the head bolts at the same time.  I have been looken at the engine builder kit, but what other recomendtions do you have?  I am assuming that the head gasket trouble was due to somthing happening to the head bolts (strecting or somthing).
TIA

Save your self a lot of work and have the valves checked out while you have them off

YA you can order a Toyota gasket kit that will probably run around $200 bucks, and should come with the head gaskets, and all sorts of other gaskets.

yoda dealer just quoted me $339 for both head gaskets and all the other gaskets.  :shocking:

However if I get jus the head gaskets than its only $56 per head.  so I am thinking I will get the gaksets, than order the enginebuilder gasket set for $130.  That puts me at a grand total of $242.  That will give me a gasket for everything too, I can replace all sorts of stuff while I have it apart.

Cool I ordered my gasket set through Napa auto and im pretty sure it was between 200-250 so that sounds about right, and it is a good idea to replace as much as possible while you have everyhting taken apart.  Good luck

What else should I replace besides the gaskets and seals.  I was plaining on getting a water pump (since its t-belt driven :shakehead:) and the themostat.

I would replace the Timing Belt, Water pump, as many seals and gaskets as possible,  check all your driveline belts, and all your hoses.  basically since you have everything apart you might as well do it all at once.

Timing belt for sure. I had a 89 4 runner with the v6 and replaced the heads and 2 weeks later I broke a timing belt. the 3.0 v6s are good engines in my opinion loots of torque. the only propblem is there was a recall on the heads Im not sure why but you should look into it also go cooper head gasket if you dont mind the retorque. mine worked great.

I would have to dissagree about the the 3.0L I belive its a crap engine, and if I had the money I would be droping in a 3.4, and in the future, I will probley do so.

Was the recall on the heads them selfs, or just the gaskets?  I always thought it was just the gasket's

The recall was on the gaskets, but the heads themselves were at least repaired, and often replaced.  Some dealers even replaced the whole motor.

Phazertwo, where abouts do you live.  If you live around Sacramento, CA check out TPS.  It is a parts distributor of of folsom and 65th I believe.  Has all the OEM toyota stuff you could need.  I think I bought my full gasket kit there for $225, all Toyota stuff.

When you are in there, replace:
headgaskets
new gaskets on everything you take apart (exhaust, valve covers, etc.)
Knock sensor
water pump/t-stat
timing belt (check the idler pulleys, you may want to replace them too.)
check all your hoses, if they're rotten replace them.
Fuel injector gaskets
spark plugs and wires

I'm sure I'll think of more as I go along, but that'll get ya started

Just did my v6 a couple of weeks ago.  Did not realize that it is triple the cost from my 22re.  :shocking:
I did the piston/rings, rod bearings, timing beltand pulleys, water pump, thermostat, and all gaskets.
Then adjusting the valves(what a pain in the a$$).  Stupid shims.  Yes a lot of work.  I would swap it but I did
not want to worry about smog(CA).
Good Luck!
