Project Never Easy
« on: Jul 02, 2010, 03:55:42 PM »
Hello Everyone,
This is my first truck and my first build. I'm currently a student so my time is mostly taken up by that. I'm starting the build this summer now that I have time to work on it. Here's some info on the truck and my plans.

Truck:
84 std cab
5 speed
Stock

Plans

Front:
RUF/ Drop hanger
High Steer
Power Steering
Locker
5.29s
Diff Armor/ Gusset
U bolt flip
Shocks/ Towers
Longfields

Rear:
Ifs axle
5.29s
Locker(welded)
Chevy Springs
Box frame
Diff Armor
U bolt flip
Shocks/ Tower

Other:
Dual Cases
Bob bed
Partial Exo
Armor
Bucket Seats
Herculiner interior
CB
20R/22R hybrid (maybe)
35s or 37s
Half Doors

This is how it looked when I got it

As you can see it's pretty rusty. Lately I've been cleaning the frame and getting rid of the rust. This build is gonna be slow since I don't have very many parts and am currently looking for a job, but I'm excited to start and can't wait to work on it.

I went out of town and didn't get pics before I left, but here they are

Here's a before and after of the interior

Before

After

The frame after I sandblasted and painted it. Still not quite done though, have to put shock mount and box the frame.

Progress on the half doors

That's all the progress for now. Finally got some parts so those should be going on soon. Also looking for some tires bigger than the 31's I have now.

Finally gonna get started on my front axle. Going to get a rebuild kit and use the old bearings, they seem fine. Also looking for some 5.29s since I don't think 4.10s and 36s will be fun on the street.

Thanks guys  I have a month until I go back to school and haven't wheeled at all this summer  :( I'm hoping to finish up in the next couple weeks so I can at least get a couple trips in before I go back.

There should be more progress soon. Axle is torn down, picked up some seals and a rebuild kit today along with some other misc. parts. Hope to clean everything and gusset and truss the axle tomorrow. Also picked up a 5.29 third, looking for another one.

For the past couple days all I've been doing is cutting and grinding. This is how far I've gotten

Also mocked up my front hanger. How does this look :dunno:

It is centered on the frame. Measured the crossmember across and found the middle and lined that up with drop hanger.

No its okay  I measured it like 3 times before I made the line. I think its just the camera angle.

Cool, what kind of parts do you have? Maybe when my truck's finished we can check out buzzards rd, I've heard of it before, but never been out there.

So I'm trying to finish up my truck and wanted to hear your opinions on my rear shackle angle. It's just tacked in right now, but looks a little too vertical  :dunno:

Let me know what you think of it.

with no weight of any kind back there i'd say near vertical would be better because if you add a bed or flatbed, then spare tire, jack, tools, camping gear, firewood, grill nightlight, whatever i bet they will become almost horizontal.
i'd leave them where they are or a little more vertical, but thats just me

Set up my first set of gears today. Wanted to know your thoughts on the pattern (sorry for the crappy pics). Gears are Yukon 5.29's with an open toyota 4 cyl carrier. Used the stock shim, can't recall the size. Also used yukon install kit with new bearings. Backlash was 0.007"
