Been a while since i've done anything. Was trying to sell/trade it for a 4runner and never found anything so it's time for some mods.

I'll be ordering my 4xinnovations cage next week. I'm going to get the shorter 4runner style cage, cut the back of the cab out and mount 4 prp seats in it.

In the mean time I started looking at my front bumper. It was big and bulky, so I marked it off so I could trim it down. Started with a sawzall and ended up getting some help from a friend with a plasma cutter.

After the sides were trimmed and the inner parts were visable I didn't feel all that good about how the previous owner mounted the bumper. So I unbolted it and pulled it off. That's were things snowballed........... Started moving my air box.....then my battery and onboard air stuff.......and figured well everything is out, so might as well dovenose it.......

6" on the passenger side, i'll get the driverside mocked tonight. I'll wait to trim the fenders under after everything is buttoned up and I can flex the front to see what's going to rub.

Passenger side

Driver side not started yet for comparison

I wasn't really wanting to sell, more trade for something with 4 seats. So I passed on a few cash offers for it. Most guys with 4runners want to go with a buggy, which I understand too.

Plan is to order my 4xinnovations cage next week when I get paid and cut the back of the cab out. :D Should be perfect!

GloNDark

Here's a few detail shots, I got some PM's asking how I did the firewall. I ran out of welding wire last night  so I didn't get the passenger side buttoned.

Radiator support.

Inner fender in the rear. I cut a slit into the fender and the let it fold over itself, now i'll stitch it together.

Under the battery tray. Intial test fits says the battery still fits. But that throws a monkey wrench into my relocating the air box, so i'm not 100% sure that i'm going to put the battery back in the stock location. If I can find a place to route my air box to where it's not pulling air from the front grill I can put the battery in the stock location

GloNDark

More progress. Everything is mocked up, tack welded really good and it's now ready for finish welding and mounting of stuff.

Not sure happy about the front hood lip and how it lines up, more work to come there.

4.7's in both. I honestly spent nearly 95% of the time in low on the rear case that has the 4.7's in it. I rarely shift into double low, but it's nice to have when I need it.

The rest of it is getting there. I hate welding sheetmetal. hahahah

Battery tray is done, I re-used the stock airbox for now because i'm broke this week and can't afford the MAF adapter and cone filter. I'll do that next week.

Grill is done
Hood is cut and in place, needs some welding around the back edge and touch up paint.
Headlights back in place

Bumper...........????? I dunno. Yet.

GloNDark

Couldn't stand looking at the front without the bumper. Looked like crap. So.............

This is temporary until I can buy a winch plate and build a completely new bumper. But looks pretty decent for an hours worth of work.

Came out great man! I think you should build a tube bumper for the front...looks a lot better with the bumper gone imo though. Is the back of the cab still coming out?

Oh and are you going wheeling anywhere for memorial day?

GloNDark

A tube bumper will be in the works soon. I need to get a pre-fabbed winch plate first and build that into it. I just can't stand the way it looks without the bumper. Looks unfinished and looks like a Highway patrol magnet too. hahaha Since I drive it on the street so much I need to keep the cops off my case.

I might be up at moonrocks this weekend, atleast Saturday or Sunday. But that depends on if I can get my 4xinnovations cage in before then. Otherwise i'll be finishing my cage and wheeling a local trail that know of a couple miles from my house.

91 ex-cab

It would be cool to check this thing out at moonrocks.

Dove nose turned out great!

Do you have any pics of how you tied the rear bumper into the frame? I'm probably going to make something similar and wanted some ideas. Also what is the rear bumper made from, size wise (2x2, 2x3, etc)?

I can post up a few tonight when I get home. It's made out of 2x3" .250 wall box, and 2x2" .250 wall box for the sides. I took some of the 2x3 and slide it into the frame about 6" and roset welded/stitch welded that on. Then put the back piece, angled the edges and side pieces on. And finally used some DOM to tie the front parts of the side to frame. It's BEEF and shouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon. hahaha

GloNDark

Some engine bay shots.

Passenger side, turned the battery to the side, extended some wiring and cut the inner fender to not interfer with my shock hoop.

Driver side, power steering moved and air box in factory-ish location. It will change when I get the cone filter in there.

I haven't figured out an overflow bottle yet, but will get it done this week.

Overall shot

GloNDark

Up next??????

4xinnovations 4 runner cage and 4 seats.  :flamer:

superyota

looks good!  do you have more pics of the walk through cab and how you mounted the seat in the back?  I'm wanting to do this to my rig, but havn't seen any pics of ones up close to give me an idea.

I haven't mounted the seats yet front or rear. I'm waiting for the cage to get here before I mount them.  Just in case I need to lower the front and or rear seats for more head room.

Right now i'm working on filling the gap between the bed and cab. So far it's been pretty simple. I cut both panels out and left about an 1.5" on the bottom of the cab side. I then took the hammer and folded it over into the bed and i'm going to stitch weld that together. For the sections on the sides i'm going to get some 3/4" or 1" box tube and stitch that into place. I'll try and get some pics up tonight when I get home.

I want to keep an eye on your build... I have been wanting to do something similar to my truck..

91 ex-cab

Sweet. I've been waiting for the back of the cab to come off for a while. Are you going to tie the cage into the frame or just bolt it to the the floor and call it good?

I'll tie it into the cage, Nothing super fancy but the 4xinnovations cage comes with floor plates for the top and bottom of the factory floor and I plan on running some supports from those straight to the frame in the back and the rock bar in the front. I also plan on adding an "X" brace at the b pillar and some more supports in the rear passenger area too. Once I cut the back of the cab out, we all stood there said "Why the hell did I wait so long to do that?"

hahahaha I was expecting a huge mess and lots of misc welding and clean up to do but honestly with some preplanning stitching it back together has been easy so far.

ajordan1975

 :drooling:

what type of back seat are you using?
1990 4Runner, SAS, 22re, 5spd, Dual stock cases, Locked f/b, interior cage

GloNDark

It's the middle seat out of a ford windstar. I got it at pic n pull this past weekend when it was 1/2 day. hahaha And since it was 1/2 price day I figured what the hell and grabbed the front seats from the same van. hahaha Matching seats front and rear? I don't think i've ever been so lucky in any of my crawlers.

Here's a crappy cell shot from another angle. I've been swamped at work and with my kids last week of school before summer. I hope to have the bed/cab filled this weekend.

ajordan1975

right on! understand the the busy part...... looking forward to seeing those pics when you can get them posted.
