Transmission Radiator used for Engine Oil?
« on: May 20, 2010, 06:49:13 PM »
I was considering upgrading my radiator from single role to three role core.

I don't have trouble cooling unless I run the AC, then I need to keep an eye on temp gauge.  If it beginns to run Hot, I turn the AC off and it goes back to normal.

I got another idea, to share and ask for feedback.  The larger radiator I'm considering also has connections for transmission cooling.  Wondering if could use the transmission cooler for engine oil cooling?  Considering connection with one of these things (i would need the female):

is it possible?  could I cause more harm than good?  is there enough engine oil pressure to achieve this goal?

1984 pickup, 22R, in Texas Heat.

Thanks in advance for any info.

An in radiator cooler is most likely to restrictive for use as an engine oil cooler.

by adding one of those remote filters you are adding volume to the engine oil and will reduce the heat of the oil

for texas heat you need to look for a V6 radiator,  order a radiator for a 88 3.0 V6 4Runner    not only is it thicker but it should sit a little taller in the engine bay and a little lower as well

I don't know if you would get much cooling effect. The water in the rad is going to be pretty hot. It works for the auto trans because converters generate a ton of heat. Enough of a difference to cool the trans a little.

If you think an oil cooler will help you, I would go with a standard type that uses air across it. Outside air is much cooler than water in the cooling system. The bigger the difference in temp, the more cooling effect you will get. Most add on trans coolers are this type for the same reason.

79coyotefrg, I like your idea about the V6 rad. Is it a bolt in fit with no mods? I'm getting ready to get a new rad for my 88 22RE pickup.
