Load sensing proportioning valve removal?
« on: May 04, 2010, 08:45:13 AM »
So I've got the old setup with one in and one out (no return) and the LSPV has been leaking out of the bottom boot.  As this has worsened brakes have become spongy.  I've read some posts about complete removal and others about replacing with aftermarket manual valves (~$50-80 I believe).  I would just hit up the local yards but I haven't been able to find this older style on anything (been looking for awhile).  The dealer wants $277 for one; so that's definetely out of the question.

What's the general opinion on complete removal for a daily driver?  Can this leak be fixed through simple o-ring replacements?

I'm about to take a trek to Colorado from Memphis and this is on the "fix it list" before leaving.

i DD my rig with no LSPV.
it can cause some rear lockup under hard braking.
i dont feel there are really any adverse effects.
its especially easy with the one in, one out style.

it will definitely cure the soft pedal issue
hold this. . .

just remove the LSPV  if you have 33's or larger you'll never notice it gone.

i removed the one from my 79 truck over 15 years ago

I removed mine off my 82 1st gen and my brakes are brutal strong.  I am running a 1" bore master and a dual diaphragm booster as well as v6 calipers and vented rotors.  I can slam on my brakes and with 35" Mtrs I never even get the rear to brake loose.  So just get rid of it.

I took mine off 4 years ago. Daily driver for the last 3 years. Honestly did not notice a difference. I think an aftermarket unit is a waste of money. Never looked back after getting rid of mine.

I removed mine a long time ago as well and drove it on the street. For myself I never drove it in the rain. That seem to be the worse time when the rear tires locked up.
This year I finally bought a after market one and grabbed a 1" MC from PNP. Works better now.
here is where I mounted mine.

It looks tight in their because of the front Dovetail.

Did you put in a proportioning valve?  Or just remove the LSPV. I am just wondering if a really need to put a proportioning valve in.

When I removed mine The rear would lock up on icy roads easily. Rear brake wear also increased to a set of shoes per year. I bought a proportioning valve from summit  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WIL-260-8419/?rtype=10 and it works great.

So when you remove the lspv  you just bypass it with coupling?

Removed mine as well along with the ABS and used the same proportioning valve as this

I'll make a smokin deal on mine if you are set on going that route. Nothing wrong with keeping it. I just subscribe to the KISS theory. Keep it simple stupid! thats why I removed the abs and valve.

So when you remove the lspv  you just bypass it with coupling?

If your luck and have an older truck there is just one in and one out.  Go get the 10mm-1.0 coupler and connect the two.  Make sure you line is positioned in a good place (not hanging down and not vibrating on frame).  On the newer (something like '82 and after) there are three lines.  I think one is a return???? (Help me out guys)  You may need to plug return and connect the other two.  You can figure out how it works and what does what by playing with LSVP once you've pulled it out.

I actually never pulled mine out it's still mounted to the frame with nother running to or from it.

All you need, as shown by a few posts above by Mnmstoy, is a simple Wilwood or Summit valve in line with the rear brakes, to reduce the pressure to the rears, adjustable according to your tire size and rear weight load. The return line from the lspv, as mentioned by jmac, can be taken out of the loop, and the triple tap by the pass wheel will need a hole plugged.

MTM, nice!  I cut the bar 6" and zip tied it up, so far so good.  I think I'll copy your set up when the time comes.
