I went out and looked at mine and I figure it will take around 76'. You might as well get 100' because you can always us it someplace on the truck. I used 11/2"x.120 mild and 11/4" for the x-bracing across the top of the cab on mine, Shohman's and Casey105's and they are all taking allot of punishment and seem to be holding up fine. And you've seen the way I drive. I don't want to start a big debate on whats better because I know. I have been building chassis's and roll cages for 12 years. Mild is the cheapest way to go. If you want to spend more money and have allot stronger exo go with DOM. Like I said Ive been dragging mine on its side for almost 3 years with the mild. Shohman dropped it on its side at the Hammers and only scratched the paint.   :flamer:

I will go with the expert locktup on this one  :)  Anyone know thw price of metal right now?  100 feet seems like it would cost a lot.  I can also go take measurements on my truck so it is more presice.

I went out a measured mine and with the two bars going over the cab I came up with 76', for what you want. 76' is a little fat, but like I said you can always use it elsewhere. Also the 76' does not take into account for changes or I hat to say a bend thats just not right during the build so it doesn't hurt to have a little extra around. All the tubing on my 4runner I only wasted about 10' give or take. We can start small with the two main hoops over the cab and the rear x-brace, then move to the fenders and down tubes later on.

havent been on i na couple days.  Moved in with James (Jack8542) and i don't have my computer anymore but i have his to use.  What if we used 1.75x.144 DOM?  I have a friend that wants to in with me on metal and thats what he wants.  We can get a lot of sticks of that for cheep he says.  I will find out.  locktup, can you bend that size metal with your die set you have?  I still have to fix me truck, all i need is a carrier with spider gears and then i can get it back together.

I'm sure I can, but I will double check. I believe I have dies for 1"-1 1/4"-1 1/2" -1 3/4". I do not know what the exo would look like with that bigass/heavy stuff, way overkill? Also your going to add allot more weight with that size, I would think. I have build cages for Jeeps with 1 3/4"x.120, but not an exo.  :flamer:

Mild will be the cheapest. Can your Friend get a deal 1 1/2"x.120" DOM like the 1 3/4", cause if he can I may buy a bunch.

I will see.  :)   He says if we buy 20 sticks of 20 foot length we can get them all for around $300.  I didn't believe him.  But we will see.

Hyena

Anyone else have any suggestions or ideas?

Hyena

Just ordered a couple Poly Preformance 3 inch lap belts today.  My drivers side seat belt doesn't roll up andymore since the extra cab panel got smashed in soo far.  Decided to get one for the passenger seat too, more comfortable.

Ramrod

are you still looking for and open carrier I just pulled two out of my truck. One from my 83 front axle and the other from my 86 rear.  I would go with 1.5" mild steel.  better looking, lighter, plenty strong.

Hyena

Ya i am, Trevinotrek said he might have one but i can't get ahold of him right now.  Were are you located?

Ramrod

I am out in sonoma about 1.5 hours from folsom.  I am going to be headed up to fordyce on the 30th if you want me to drop it off.

Hyena

I need one by the middle of this week.  Thanx anyway.

Hyena

Picked a carrier up today and welded the spider gears right after i got home.  Gonna let it cool off tonight and then tomarrow i will clean it up and put it in.  Hopefully i can get the truck done tomarrow.  The only other problem is that the truck won't start now.  It might just be the battery.  And i got my new seat belts today and installed them already.  They are made by Crow.  3 inch lap belts and they are great.  No more shoulder harness to lock you in the vehicle.

Hyena

Just got back from the rubicon this weekend.  Got lots of pictures but can't post them untill timarrow when i get my camera cable back from my dad.  I went through Little Sluice again without breakage.  Got stuck a couple times and had to highlift the truck but i made it.  little more body damage then last time.  The welded front isn't as bad as i thought it would be.  Only a big problem when going down the slabs or trying to turn around in a tight spot.  Other then that it isn't much different then my detriot.  Hydro-assist is deffanatly on the to get list though.

locktup

You keep screwin up that truck you will have no need for an exo. BUGGY!!!!!!

Thought about it, but not on an extra cab frame  :(  I like having a cab anyway.  Got a price on the metal, not much of a discount after all.  pm'ed you.

Yota4life

Hey do this and you wont have much problems smashing your sheetmetal. Remove bed and flatbed/tube it, exo the cab tied into the flatbed, remove front fenders and tube around the hood....buy or make tube doors or go no doors, then you dont got much to smash... :yesnod:

Im not worreid about smashing it.  Don't really care anymore.  I might remove the fenders when the exo is built.  Don't want to do a flatbed untill i link the rear.

Hey, we saw that guy in the boots and shorts when we were going up the slabs toward the wentworth springs cutoff.  Did you see the 3rd gen xcab rollover?  he was gettin righted when we got to him, took a bad line down a ledge and rolled over his passenger side to the roof. Had a 'pane buggy and a jeep right him and pull him up.

Blackdog, that guy in the boots and shorts was riding with me Saturday on the trail.  I passed you above the spillway but didn't think it was your truck.  I noticed yours didn't have any rocksliders and that one did.  I now you do now.  Would have loved to talk to you.

:flamer:  I can cut that frame off behind the cab and bend up a new tube section. Instead of the exo 4-link the rear, ditch the bed and Party Like A Rock Starr. It would be easy to make the tube bed large enough for anything you are going to need for a couple of days on the trial. That would remove a bunch of weight. Then exo. Before we do anything you need to figure out what you want so we don't have to cut or re-due anything later. PM'ed back.
