Well i recently picked up a 85 runner that is currently not running.(blown head gasket) should i do the work and invest the money to fix it? or just scrap it an do a motor swap now:-) which motor would work well. im new to the toyota crawler scene so as usual im tryin to soak up some knowledge and make the best descisions the first time around:-) all answers appreciated.
thanks

If it a 22re I would just rebuild it and call it good, or find a good low mileage one and swap it.

Since you bought it this way and may not know the history of the engine and how bad it was a full swap would be in order.

no, if you want to crawl you want to keep the 22RE

i'd pull the head and see what the inside of the cylinders look like.  if the pistons are good and snug in their cylinders just do the headgasket, if they will wiggle around and the block is scratched, then  a full rebuild or swap is in order,  but do yourself a favor and keep the 22RE

if you want more power than a 22re swap in a 3.4tacoma v6 it all depends on how much you want to spend

If you are thinking of that kind of swap a 4.3 or 3.8 V6 would be my suggestion back it up with an auto with dual ultimate's you would still be able to crawl it. If you do the  3.8 swap you could even swap in a T-Type for a bunch more hp. I would say no to the V8 just too heavy.

I dont think he had that kind of money in mind when he posted the question. Most likely he has a W56, So I say a 3RZ. But if money is no object, well then toss a 1UZ and auto trans in and be done with it.

Best bet would be to do a little research on the motor like Glen said.  If it's questionable, then swapping in a 22r is gravy.  Or build the block and get a http://www.engnbldr.com/ head and run a better exhaust.

We really need to know how far your willing to go to "swap" a motor.  Cause you can really dump a ton of money into a swap, and then there is the smog?
