The 9.25 is a pretty stout axle but they are known to have pinion problems. There are also limited gear and locker options. As far as I know 4.88 is as low as they go. I would recommend a D70U. This will have a smooth bottom and not much less clearance than the 9.25. The 70 will be full float and is available in 35 spline stock. Just gear and lock and you will have an axle you will never have to upgrade. You can get an 8 lug 44 to match and everything will be set up to switch out to a front 60 latter if you want to.

thanks for all the info. just not sure on what to do just yet

I don't know what the u stands for I'm guessing it's just a dana code. They are smooth on the bottom and have better clearance than the regular or HD 70. They came in a lot of stuff. 80s ford would be the best place to look. The newer dodges have them but they have 32 spline shafts that neck down at the carrier. The 70u is probably the best compromise between strength and ground clearance. I think the 14 bolt is the ultimate in strength but the ground clearance sucks. I was mainly throwing this out there to point out that the 9.25 is probably not the best choice. I think d60, d70, and 14blt are all better options.

If a lighter weight semi float is wanted then a ford 9" is the thing to look at. Lots of people run the d44 front 9" rear combo on tacoma sized rigs with good results.

i looked it up and the U is just the code for the 70 with a smooth bottom diff

I can't say I really understand fords logic on what truck gets what. I think 1 tons with any motor and 3/4 ton with a diesel would be good starting places. That being said any of these trucks could also have a rear 60 or a sterling. I think in the late eighties and early nineties the sterlings became more common and at some point replaced the Dana stuff all together. I think the most common place for the 70u was the vans but these were 71-72" wide. The van width works well with a DRW 60 front and stock backspace hummer rims. This will give cheap beadlocks and SRW width. to get one in the 66-68" range you need a SRW truck.

I did this research a while back before settling on a 14bt so take it with a grain of salt. I got most of the info off of pirate so that would be a good place to look.
