Swapped89 workin on Hydro assist. on the cheap
« Reply #120 on: Jan 11, 2010, 01:43:45 PM »
Drilled and tapped my spare steering box last weekend. Only problem i had was when i was cleaning the big input shaft section it came apart scattering like 50 ball bearings all over my shop floor. So im getting a new steering box tonight to hopefully put its internals in the box i allready tapped.

whats your wheel base at?

edit:

thinking about moving rear axle forward also for better wieght distribution, And be able to steer when aired down

not sure if its just me, but that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard... but hey, its your truck and if thats what you want to do, then who can stop you right?

ive aired down to 1 and 2 punds before and have never had a problem steering. but that was snow... on granite i have gone down to 6 and 8 and again, never had a problem steering. also with your hydro assist you wont have to worry about that. if your going to move it anywhere i would push it back an inch or so

My wheel base is at 107.5"

When my ARB is locked turning is quite a PITA on anything.

In hard spots on rocks and deep snow when im locked it dont turn for :pokinit:. I dont like turning the ARB on and off all the time to turn. Even after I turn it off the birfs still bind until you move around a bit, sometimes thats not really an option. You've never drivin my truck so i dont know how you could make a legit comparison.(my truck compared to adams) Turning still wont be that great when its locked up but at least the tires will actually move with hydro assist.

Also My front end is a lil heavier than some peoples. V6-bumper & winch. :gap:

So I drilled and tapped this dang steering box housing before checking to see if it was any good. And after a quick inspection I found that the cylinder wall were the teflon ring rubs against is pitted. I think its enough to let power steering fluid bypass and really mess with the pressure in the ram. SOOO I think Ima have to get another housing :-\ o fart.

Here's a pic, what do ya guys think. I think its garbage :_oops: I shoulda checked 1st but i was too antsy to drill and tap it.

Got rear ended this weekend in my GF's 4runner
« Reply #138 on: Jan 18, 2010, 12:30:35 PM »
Got rear ended last weekend in my GF's runner. Hopefully gettin a new bumper out of the deal. I was turning into my folks driveway for a family dinner when some new young driver clipped the runners  rear bumper lost control and totalled his ride. Luckily no one was hurt. Im 99.99% sure he was speeding cause when looked in my rearview mirror while slowing down to turn he was no where in site. Once i was almost in the drive way it sounded like a bowling ball hit the 4runner and then i saw some idiot just fly outta control into my parents nieghbors ditch.

On a better note I also installed some ARP studs on my steering arms in anticipation for doing my Hydro assist, still waitin on a flat pitman arm before i go for it.

Moved my steering box forward and my front axle 1.25" and built a rear bumper in last couple weekends.
Bumper was made with 2 x 3 x 3/16" tube steel. cost about 30$ to make. I think it looks good and sturdy :gap:

i just drilled the spring perch holes 1.25" toward the rear to move the axle

Looks good, Hydro assist was one of the best investments i made. I have friends without hydro that simply cant run a obstacle or line because of it, they need to turn into a rock face, hold a line, or turn while bound up and stock steering wont do it without moving back and forth and if it does you run the risk of breaking a sector shaft. I have never seen a truck locked and aired down that wasnt a pain to turn on pavement.
