1st Gen. lift question
« on: Oct 12, 2004, 12:11:22 AM »
Im new to the site as well as the 4x4 world and have a quick question. I have an 85 4runner and intend  on putting a 4 inch lift on it in the next few weeks. I have new brake lines and new drag link but am not sure what else i may need or problems i may run in to. Are there other steering components or anything else that i will have to change? Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks

Have you considered using a crossover steering system yet?

Thats something i might look into in the future, but i dont really have the extra money for it right now. If i had the money that would be i nice route to go though.

Id put ford shock mounts on it and longer travel shocks at the same time.  Beings as you'll already be in the area.

Ive heard about doing that, but i dont weld and im not sure of any places around here that do work like that. Do you just get them at a junk yard and cut them off or what?

Ill have to dig up the part number, I bought a set new for $20 at the local dealership.  They can be bolted on, actually they are riveted from the factory so it owuld not be very hard to drill and sleeve the framerails to bolt them on.

So is it just the top mounts? Are they a stem or eye type mount?

They are basically just a longer version of the stock mounts that use a EB1 mount instead of the SS2 mount that yotas come stock with.

Other than brake lines and ure lift kit, i dun see what is "needed" but of course some new bilsteins with long travel hoops and a crossover kit could be considered "needed"

here are my ford shock mounts.  They are cut down about 2-3 inches.  There should be another rivit hole just below the one on there.  Mine are welded on, not bolted.

Yah, it would hold fine, there isnt that much stress on shocks, and plus, if u wanna really overdo it, 4 bolts would hold it on fine... seen that new ford commercial where 6 bolts hold on the trucks bed? they lifted the truck by the bed haha, so i think ure safe ;)

yeah there isnt much stress on the shock towers as long as your bump stops stop the travel befor the shock bottoms out the person befor me put longer travel shocks on my rig with out a lift or hoops and it took one speed bump and my passenger side shockmount was compleatly off and my drivers side almost was  :_oops:

enough about ford shock mounts..., what about a marlin suspension kit? isn't that what you wanted to know about in the original post? get the marlin hoops, crossover steering(marlin) etc....and build it to wheel with your own abilities
85 p/u, marlin#208, built 22R on propane, old school longs, 5.29's / detroits, bobbed, chopped, and flopped
