Dingman.

Lennie, blew up his gears not 30minutes into the rubicon trail in his 12 bolt.

That is the only dealings with one i have ever had.

IronClad

i ran mine on 37s/38s/40's to the point where it was bent in a U and spitting fire out of the breather with longer trips down the road... the shafts and 5.13's out of it along with the welded carrier are still running around the hill in someones rig..

All i have to ask  though is who set his gears up ?

i wouldn't run a 12 bolt personally.. but just like i stated, just cuz you have a 12 bolt doesn't mean its gonna blow up or make your :pokinit: suck. some people don't have issue with them. if you want to, your able to buy aftermarket stuff to beef up the weak links. as far as gears blowing up, thats not enough to say or think an axle is bad. i mean look as your gearing experience. toyota rears aren't bad.

Not saying they are bad.  I understand gear issues. I was just saying that was the only experience ive had with them..
Other than i hear every person say they are bad.

ya, its one thing to buy a 6 14bolt sf, which its still beefier than a 10/12 bolt, but its a lot of money if your gonna try and convert a 14bolt 8lug FF to a 6lug SF. at least from what i know. but when you have a 14bolt SF (6lug) your back to a c-clip style, the ring gear is a 9.5 instead of a 10.5 and there are more downsides to a SF than a FF besides just the c clip (like the amount of load it can take/and the bearing design.

IronClad

or just build one of these and never have to worry about it ever :D

ironclad..is that yours? do you have any info on whether the hubs were home done or whether they were bought. i know a few companies make new 6lug hubs for the FF 14bolt but there like 400$

IronClad

yep thats mine.. i did the hubs with the help of a friend.. basicly an hours worth of work per side of welding drilling and lathe work. my rear axle is pretty cheap.. i have the cost of gears/bearing kit and disk brackets from ruff stuff. so unless you can get  a 14bolt for free you would be looking at like 75-150 more depending and if you had access to a lathe

yup thats what i love about 14bolts. thats the way to go, id way rather do it myself then paying tons of money for some custom billet hubs. ive seen a few other people do what your talking about. aren't there a few new holes that had to be right by the existing lug bolt hole? not that id imagine it would be any weaken on an application like this..as long as you aren't doing it to a big flat bed hauler. did you just use a 6 lug wheel for the pattern. and did you also have to grind the 6lug wheel a bit to fit it on the 14b?

IronClad

ya theres like 2 holes that go through some welds but im not really worried about it. i think i used a wheel spacer to mark the pattern and no grinding had to be done on the wheel but only large bore alum and steel wheels will fit

Hey guys..

Just a heads up..  Make sure you start locking your Toyota's in case you already don't..
There has been a few thefts local to my area of toyotas getting ripped off.

Just keep them safe...
