Sweet looking build.  How much room will you have when all is said and done?

hopefully im not hijacking...or posting too big, but this is what i want.... a second gen runner attached to the back half of a 3rd gen reg cab.... i want a shorter cab prolly bout six inches less cab and about 30" less bed (15" less per side of wheel) only use the roll up portion of the back window... leave out the half window that doesnt move... maybe even get a shop to round off the corner so the glass fits right....
MIGHT want to keep the full six foot bed as a shell and a twin airbed fits well, making excellent sleeping quarters

Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

also, if you look at the color of the cab compared to my lockouts from my last build... I would imagine that color would work well for me as well

gonna finish the window frame with angle iron, then silicon bed and rivet in some plexiglass.  I think the cab portion was 22" deep so i would guess i gained roughly 18" or so inside... Its awesome! i think i can fully recline the seats, i just didnt want to yet cause that black jack was oozing outta the seam alittle and i didnt want a black stripe on the back of my seats. Hopefully i can get a solid work day in on it tomorrow.

Looks Good. I did mine well over two years ago and still haven't finished the windows.
Mike

Not that you need it but I did mine a little different.

I stretched the cab and shorten the bed.

82juguete

Thanks Mike, and i have been through just about every pic of your build in your album, you did a great job.  I would've done it like yours, but its just too much for me at this time.

Had a good work day today, patched the roof, built the window frames, patched the lower part of extra cab to bed floor, sealed everything up inside, bondo'd and primered everything.... ill post pics tomorrow.

fj-rankenstein

after your done can you come and help me finish mine??!!!!   :disturbed:     all this crazy cold weather that we have been having up here is sure a deteurant to work in the garage..   good job on yours though.. you are making some quick progress...

Thanks everybody...
So heres how it went today... I got up and cut out the windows based on a cardboard templates I made.  Plexiglass is a pain in the  :moon: , I would not recommend it to anyone and if doing it again would try lexan or just make some beadrolled sheetmetal fillers.  Put the first window in place and began drilling for the rivets, CRACK corner busted off... trace it again, cut it out again, and spend twice as much time drilling carefully on the bench, then marking on the truck, drilling on the truck, applying weather tape and finally riveting it on.... BUT  I cant fully pop most of the rivets since the full clamping pressure keeps wanting to crack the plexi, so i have to partially pull em till the backs flare out just enough and then cut the stems off the rivets... Like I said, BIG PAIN but i wanted the rear section to be sealed so im happy in the end.

Then i scuffed the top portion up and masked everything and shot it with some thinned out flat black rustoleum in my little DeVillbiss gun, worked pretty good.

Ill snap a few tomorrow after i get the rear slider back in.... are you just curious about the bedspace im left with, or where the cab meets the bed or what?

I'd like to see how ALL of the edges meet up. I'm sorry to be such a pain for pics but, I'm really thinking of following your suit in this thing. Your details of the whole build are great. I just wanna do it EXACTLY your way if I go that route. Thanks for being so understanding

No worries... i want to provide the help that i struggled to find... i will tell you, you can learn from my mistakes, as my edges are FAR from perfect.  The whole cut that i did to the donor cab some time back had to be basically a blind cut based solely off of measurements and referencing...... inevitably the gaps along the bedsides are too big for me to do any welding in that area.  Its solid as a rock because of the welding to the bedrails and where the rear roof meets the back of the cab... I would say to spend your time making sure those cuts are true, where it is notched to the top of the bedrail, because mine were dead on and it made lining things up super easy.  For the sides, i would suggest getting the cuts in the ballpark, as i did, and just prepare to have to make patch pieces in order to fully weld it up.... will post pics tomorrow.

BUDDERS

Instead of using rivets that can crack your plexi, you might want to try something like a carriage bolt with a rubber washer under the head.  Just my  :twocents:

"They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken"

"Hopefully, if I crap in a gopher hole, one doesn't try and nibble at my taint"  - my freind Fat Tony

"I once read somewhere that drinking causes violence, so I quit reading"

82juguete

i think the rivets would've worked perfect as far as simplicity and stuff if the plexi wasnt so brittle...  I honestly think i was envisioning LEXAN the whole time... stronger, more flexible, less tempermental, everything plexiglass is NOT.  But it will work for the time being, and they dont leak or whistle or anything so im happy.

Got a good shakedown run in: the 2.5 hour drive back to school here and it went great.  Honestly i dont notice any difference in noise compared to before, though that could be because i was fully loaded with clothes and bags in the backseat...Thats right, the backseat of my first gen(even though theres technically no seat yet)

It was so awesome to be able to fully load all of my stuff into the back, out of the weather, no need to strap it down or anything.  I felt retarded for getting so excited about that but it was awesome... and on the long straights i just reclined my seat back and cruised it, SO COOL.   I did notice a little draft from back there, but its from obvious gaps and i was fully expecting it to happen.  Anyways, im glad that i went through with this, and though i was hesitant a little about the looks and stuff, the functionality of it makes it worth it times 100.  I will try to post some more pics of specifics, interior shots, etc... but might just wait until a compile a more organized HOW TO write up.    :beerchug:
