I just got a nervous feeling in my stomache when I saw your pic of that piece of cab in the back of your truck. Now that I have parted out this 82 that I came into, I have a bare cab that is prime for adding to my cab just as you are bout to do. Make sure and load PLENTY of step by step pics. I just may follow suit. Did you ever get a hold of a complete working dash guage assy? Sorry mine didn't work for ya.

No...but mine functions besides the odometer, and it aesthetically pleasing.  I just wanted a factory tach, but can do without.

All i am going to do for now is trim, fit and mock up the donor cab portion.  No cutting to my actual truck cab until i have time to do it all, start to finish...

Was searching for something and came across this old jew. BUMP to a classic thread

Well i did some trimming today...  started off by making a cardboard template of the inside contours of the bed:

You can see i tried to make it very tight fitting:

82juguete

then after taking some reference measurements i traced the template onto the donor cab and cut the backs of both sides...

82juguete

Then going from cut to cut, i used the "string and spraypaint" technique, just like on my bed-bob, to get a straight line to cut across the bottom of the back of the cab... this is the edge that is going to be welded to the bedfloor...

82juguete

after some long, and some tricky cutting i ended up with this...

82juguete

oh and i guess i should show the actual portion i will be using...

82juguete

Now i tried to jam it into position just to get a visual, but its just not going to happen.  I am happy with how everything is fitting and shaping up, but the geometry of the bed shape and cuts just wont allow it to drop in without removing the front of the bed and spreading the sides some....

I soooo want to just keep movin on this but i need my truck for moving this weekend, and can't dismantle it at this time.

As hard as it is, i have to walk away now until i have a long weekend or something when i can knock the rest out...

Nice job so far! I've never see that approach that your using before(countouring the sides to fit the bed)

What or where is SLO?  You have to finish that thing, I've got my donor cab just waiting to get cut up and fitted.

hell eyah bro looking good cant wait to see how its done

82juguete

SLO= San Luis Obispo, CA.  That is where i attend Cal Poly, and unfortunately my apartment there is less than ideal for an operation like this (no garage, no driveway, no tools)

I will find a way to finish this some day!

Anyone ever remove the front bed wall on a first gen.  I took out the 3 bolts up each side and the sides break free fine but the bottom seam wont budge.. is there anything more than that silicone stuff holding it on the bottom edge?  Im gonna have to investigate closer tomorrow

Thanks Mike... and yea i definitely tried to shimmy it it sideways first, but i just dont have the room with my current shock mount/cage setup in my bed right now.  All that stuff will be coming out eventually but im not going to screw around with it much more over Thanksgiving...maybe more on Christmas break, we'll see.

82juguete

Well i went ahead and pulled out all my bedcage, spare carrier etc. out of my bed today.  Thats probably gonna be it for now though, might try a test fit on the xtracab tomorrow....

Heres a quick photoshop of more or less what im going for, though it might change along the way:
