That does look sweet!

You better connect the bed to the cab though or the tortional twist from the frame is gonna wrinkle up your pretty sheetmetal.  I've seen that happen on a few lowriders with a walk through into the camper shell.  I think the best thing to do is to weld up some C channel vertically on both sides once you've cut out the back of the cab and the new portion is tacked in place.  Then you can go to town doing the rest of the welding and sheet metal fab.  Have you figured out how to connect the back wall of the cab to the bottom portion of the bed yet?

Thanks guys,
Yes, its definitely going to become a unibody of sorts, with the cab merged to the bed.  For the lower seam, im leaving the cut along the bottom of the cab a little high, so i have enough material to fold over and beat into shape along the ridges of the bed floor...  I was going to do similar for the sides, but may just use c channel or flat like you said, to fill that gap and make it solid, kinda like they do for demolition derby stuff...

Had to post this in here... believe it or not i found it on a local CL ad here in fresno:
Custom 1984 Toyota Pickup Extra Double Cab 4X4 - $3500
Custom made extra double cab truck with tons of upgrades and extras including a 1988 fuel injected 22r, lift kit with 35" tires, custom front bumper and more. Has a new clutch and brand new front brakes and rotors.

Interesting concept but looks like a super clean job... I think i like it!

So today i trimmed up the extra cab portion, and got it fitting to the back of the cab nice and tight.  Basically i need to:
-remove front wall of bed
-cut out back of main cab
-fold down flap, weld to bed floor
-weld in strips to tie bedsides to cab
-weld rooflines together, brace if necessary
-weld extra cab sides to bedsides and bottom to floor
-move slider window from cut portion to xcab
-seal inside with silicon
-clean welds, bondo, sand, primer
-lay carpet inside (if im feelin ritzy  :eyebrow: )

I have to go back to school in 12 days, minus about 3 for holiday stuff so 9 days give or take..
Do i go for it?

cool, so i got 1 thing checked off the list today

got the bedwall out... im realizing more and more that leaving a lip on bottom cut on the cab and "folding" it over to meet the bedfloor is going to be next to impossible, with that big hump in the middle.

So tomorrow i think im going to make a cardboard template that will be used to make a sheetmetal filler for this joint.  My plan is to cut strips from a donor bed to fill the gaps inbetween the cab and bed, and do some heavier reinforcing on the inside.  Man i wish johnny from wildyoats still had his build pics up for reference, oh well ill wing it.  But the next 2 days im going to be busy so very little will likely get done.

next week we'll get started on everything that way we can get it done before you head back to school we'll finish it no worries

Got a little more done today... Made a cardboard template for the floor piece im going to have to make... im thinnking 18ga sheet, that way i can make this piece and a strip to join the roofs together as well:

Also made one piece of "angle" actually cut from some rectangular tubing, so the long side would overlap the bedside mount plenty.  This option should give me plenty of welding surface and make for a pretty strong joint...I wanna say its 3/16'', maybe 1/8'' thick.

hopefully i can get the sheetmetal soon so i can get this stuff done. I can weld the angle to the bedsides now, but not to the cab, as i may need to cinch in the sides while fitting things.

82juguete

Man, I need like a half-sheet of 18ga sheetmetal (roughly 4'x5') Valley iron has full sheets(4x10) for $50somthing... but thats WAY more than i need.  Anyone know a good place in the Fresno area that would have half sheets, remnants, etc at a good price?

82juguete

nobody huh? well hopefully i can ttrack some down  tomorrow.  spent most of today shooting with some buddies, but did a little work with the hour or so of daylight left when i got home. got most the surfaces ill be welding ground down and loosened up the headliner inside where ill be doing the cut.  anyone have any tips for removing the back window without damaging the seal?

82juguete

Nevermind on the window, the FSM has a pretty detailed writeup i just found.  Still welcoming any pointers though...  :yesnod:

82juguete

Got more done today... got the floor pieces cut and tacked in, also welded the angle iron side pieces onto the bed, oh and removed the back window.... heres the pics:

Im having my doubts about finishing now.... feelin soooo close yet soo far away at this point.  I had a funeral today, my gf's mom is having surgery tomorrow, so that basically leaves me friday and saturday to finish everything, so im not sure if i should even make the big cut now anymore....  ????????

Man we did work today, for only a couple hours of work.... I thinnk im going to go ahead and go for it now lol:

82juguete

starting out by mapping out the cuts and drilling holes in the corners where the vert and horizontal top cuts would meet.

I chose to cut right outside of the body seam, which is about as far out as you would want to go anyway.

82juguete

got at it at about 7:15 this morning...just 6" cutting wheel, nice and slow:

82juguete

My cousin helped me cut the bottom line about an inch and a half above the floor patch piece.... this left a flange that he then cut at every angle change:

Also note, once at this point, i could hammer out from the inside, areas which had slightly too-large of gaps.  Then i could fully weld everything.

82juguete

put some black jack all along the seam to seal out the weather, and began pounding the tabs down to create a rolled edge:
