we would love to go wheelin with you in the fall again!  it would be awesome if you can make it up.

So i have been preparing for my gears to get here.  I took the whole front end out frome under the truck and dissasembled it.  I still had some welding and fabwork to do on the front axle.  I built a skidplate for the hydraulic ram and also added another strengthening plate to the steering arms i made.  also fabbed up some diff armor and did some other finish work.  this week the whole front end is getting sandblasted and painted, then I will work on getting the gears and lockers installed.

Here are a few pics of the axle.  The skidplate will completely protect the hydro steering ram and pretty much the entire tie rod.  The extra piece i added into the steering arms should really help disperse the stress to the knuckle as a whole.  The arm now also utilizes the area where the steering stop bolts into place as an extra mounting hole.  So now i have a double sheer setup on each knuckle and there are 8 bolts total on each knuckle holding the arms on. Should be pretty stout!  In the first pic of the steering arm im just holding it in place as a reference, that arm actually bolts onto the other side.  I will get better pics of everything after its all painted and reassembled.

Thanks dude!  I picked up the axle from sandblasting today, it turned out really good.  I hung up the axle and all my links and painted them tonight.

The tie rod and the lower links will be that orange copper color, the steering arms are a dark grey and everything else will be black.  I will take pics of the front axle somewhat put together tomorrow.

I also shipped out my new front ring and pinion to get cryo treated so i probly wont get that back for about 2 weeks.  so i will have to work on some other stuff in the mean time before i can setup my gears.

well in that case,  i'm asking 100,000 dollars for it! haha  cant wait for you to win the lottery!

ok so i got a few things done today.  reassembled the axle as much as possible without the 3rd member in.  I like how the colors look under the truck.  I also drilled out the restrictor plate on my supra steering pump.  Hopefully this helps with the lack of power in the ram.

in this first pic you can see how much protection the skidplate offers for the ram and tie-rod.

A few weeks ago I also painted the intake pipes going from my turbo to the intake manifold with the same copper paint. the second pic is just showing how you can see the piping from the fenderwell.

Sweet!

I like the sandwiched steering arm plate you built; looks damn strong.  Question (apologies in advance if this has already been explained in your past posts, but): What lower stock or stock/modded steering arms are you running there, and in what configuration?  I can't tell if those are both cut down double ended stock steering arms (one from a US spec 80's passenger side and the other from a foreign RHD 80's driver side) or if they are stock US spec LHD arms flipped front to back.  I know the relative height of the arms at the axle's centerline will be different, depending on whether you are using the arm ends originally intended for the rearward tie rod link In a flipped forward configuration, or if you are linking the drag link holes of two double ended arms from LHD and RHD models.  I envy of all the flexibility you guys with linked 80 series housings have in terms of options for steering over us guys with leafers.

Also, and i have to say again that your custom upper steering arms are sweet.  Are you using the hole from the deleted ABS sensors on 80 series ABS knuckles as the location for you third bolt holes in addition to the regular bolt holes for the upper trunion bearing cap on your knuckles or did you drill and tap or machine the third holes on an earlier non-ABS set of knuckles?  It would be cool to see or read some more detail about how you got to this upper arm set up.

Copper is cool, too!  I am originally from AZ, the copper state, so I like it for sure!

The lower steering arm setup is made out of the stock arms.  For the pass side i just cut off the rear half of the arm and then drilled out the tapered tie rod hole to accept a 3/4" bolt.  For the driver side i took the stock lower arm and spun it 180 degrees and bolted it back on. Then i cut off the rear half (which would have originally been the front half of the arm).  Like you said, spinning the lower arm 180 degrees left me with a different height reletive to the center of the axle, and it also rubbed on the brake rotor because the arm has a slight curve to it.  So to fix that issue i cut the arm off of the part that bolts to the knuckle and i changed the angle and brought the arm over away from the knuckle. Then i tacked it back into place on the bolt flange portion of the arm.  I made a gusset that runs the length of the arm to tie everything together, then i heated everything with the torch and welded it all together.  I welded very nice and i dont think i have to worry about it breaking.  I would have liked to use the right hand drive arm but it wasnt in the budget, so i created my own.  For the upper arms i took the abs sensor out and welded in a threaded bung that accepts a grade 8 fine thread 7/16 bolt.  I also took my upper bearing caps off and machined them down to a completely flat surface on top in the mill at work so the upper arms would have a nice surface to sit on. Then as you can see in recent pics i just added in the extra gusset that utilizes the steering stop bolt on each knuckle.  I think that extra mounting location will really help spread the load onto the entire knuckle.  I feel like i have come up with a very strong and inexpensive way for my steering to work well. Originally i wanted to try and use the rear tie rod setup with the full hydro ram, but the tie rod ran right through the area where i wanted to mount my lower links, so i scratched that idea.
Thanks for the positive comments on my work!  i REALLY like the work that is being done on your runner right now.  Its cool to see another guy using an 80 series front axle.  There are obvious benefits in using that setup, but i think 95% of people are to afraid of the steering setup to use them.  With the long awaited release of the hellfire fab knuckles, im sure we will be seeing alot more 80 series axles being used now.

Thanks for the response.  Always great tech!  I could see guys with the right skills straight copying what you have done.  But, as you said, many people have been scared off from using the 80 series axle due to steering concerns and mysteries, especially until BillyBob13 manufactured the new HiSteer knuckles.  I thought it was cool, and I have been watching from the sidelines for a while, to see the stuff that you and Steve925 have been doing with 80 series axles on minitrucks.  Well, as you can see, it got me thinking and moving in that direction.  Your mods and use of the steering stop bump hole is awesome.  I am no engineer, but your statement about it speading the load well accross the knuckle seems right on the money.  I am using the Slee arm, with three bolts, but tieing that into the steering stopbolt hole would seem to add a ton more strength.  Great work!  I look forward to following more of what YOU do!

Yeah if you tie your slee arm into the knuckle using the steering stop bolt, that should help strengthen your setup alot.  Thanks for the positive comments! I appreciate them

So i got my rear third all setup with the cryo'd 5.29 gears and the powertrax no-slip locker.   Installed into the rear axle and got it all put back together.
Then on sunday i installed my spartan locker into the used v6 carrier I got from Low Range Off-Road.  So now im just waiting on my front 5.29 R+P to come back from cryo treating and I can get the front axle all setup.  I was really hoping to be wheeling it this weekend, but it looks like the front R+P wont be back to my house until next week sometime.

Here is a pick of the rear third all setup.... thats all ive got for now
