Question about my Twin stick Dual Transfercase shifting
« on: Jun 28, 2008, 05:45:09 PM »
Ok, I have an 89 pickup with dual 2.28's with a twin stick. Here is my question. With the front case in LO and the rear case in HI, I can shift the rear case from 4wd and 2wd no problem. But, when I put the rear case in LO it wont go into 2wd???...

So I have '2wd-LO' but no '2WD-Double Low'

Is the detent pin or pill, as some call it, removed?  It is supposed to be removed when installing a twin stick.  The front shifter has nothing to do with the rear shifter in regards to locking it out.  When in low you shouldn't be able to shift to 2wd if the "pill" is in there.

Can I do it with the transfercase still in the vehicle?

Not as far as I know  :headscratch: because you have to remove the left shift rail far enough (forward) to clear the pill for removal which also requires removing the roll pin in that same rail for the shift fork.  I don't think there is enough clearance in there for the shift rail to pull out that far if it is still in the truck. Be sure that the left rail is also clearanced at the front tip  so it won't hit the adapter case or shift rail in the front case or you'll have problems there as well. I had a small issue with my 2/4 shift rail hitting the inside of my adapter case  :smack: which I was able to fix without too much difficulty after removing the rear case.

Did you install the twin stick yourself?  Did you not do this part when it was done, perhaps? This sounds like what you're having problems with.  :yesnod: Plus it's much easier to do on the bench than in the truck. Especially if you happen to drop the roll pin in the case.  :_oops:

Good luck with fixing it.  :beerchug:

yeah, the twin stick was installed by the previous owner. Maybe I will throw a 4.70 gear in there at the same time I have the TC out fixing the twin stick :gap:

X's 2!!   I just learned about this in another forum, and don't remember reading about this in Marlin's instructions on the t-case page.

Here's a pic!

Hmmm, I wonder why it doesn't mention cutting off the end in the instructions?

:dunno: but I do know that particular detail is in the written instructions that come with the twin stick, If I remember correctly.  :headscratch:
