Exaust poping?
« on: Mar 10, 2008, 07:45:49 PM »
Just installed 2.5in on a Downey header+muffler and unknown cat. It pops when downshifting. What do I do to fix that? :help:
Also, this setup is louder than stock, so how can I quiet it? :help:

Well you did buy a high flow set up, that is why it is louder. Popping is normal upon deceleration. And if you want it quiet get a different muffler (more restrictive).

Any muffler recommendations?
As for popping, I  thought it was to much fuel or a timing thing?

popping is an exhaust leak or not enough exhaust (tubing).  if you take the exhaust off from the cat it will really pop.  is the cat hallow?  how about the muffler?

I guess it could be a leak, but most leaks I hear sound like a tick. Most flowmasters I hear have a poppy sound to them when they decelerate. Mine has a slight gargely poppy noise when I decelerate too and mine is Borla muffler 2 1/4 all the way back.

I the cat wasn't hollow, I didn't look at the muffler. The exhaust does stop after the muffler, nothing after the muffler.

If I wrap the header, will it quiet it down?

try running with out a muffler  then the popping is cool / turns heads

I did this once on my celica  muffler rusted out and drove for 2-3days  car sounded like it had a built V8  + i liked downshifting the auto tranny.

jkief86,  I had the same issue when had the exhaust shop do the same setup on mine.  It sounded like you could actually hear the exhaust valves opening and closing.  It had a ton of top end torque and flew on the freeway, but had very little bottom end torque and the exhaust noise was unbearable (mainly because it dumped down toward the ground right in front of the rear axle).  My solution was to have the exhaust shop change out the tubing for some 2.25" and run it all the way out back to dump out in the factory location.  Mine still had a popping sound every once in a while afterward (really only noticable at idle) and this was due to a burned #4 exhaust valve and I eventually rebuilt the engine to fix that.  Keep in mind that a exhaust leak can also cause a popping noise too...

A header wrap is not recommended, they subject the header to intense heat and cause them to wear out and warp. I believe the wraps are used on race cars were the header is used only a few times.

exhaust leak.  When I finally got around to sealing the multiple holes in my exhaust, my truck stopped doing that.

Well I got a some new clamps and I'll seal the leaks but this thing is still lowder than I had hoped it would be. The poping has weaked and only happens in the low rpm's now.
The top end power is there, it's real nice, and I didn't seem to loose very much low end. I can't tell that I did.

:werd:

also, i have run different performance mufflers and no muffler on my 22r.. they all pop... its mostly a matter of a very short exhuast and backpressure (well lack there of) the exhuast evacuates faster than the engine can produce it and backfires)

if you want it to sound stock, then you have to run a stock type muffler. performance mufflers are louder, because they are flowing more

well thats what i like to think anyways :) not 100% sure, but thats the only reason i could come up with :gap:

all the yotas i have ever heard with aftermarket exhuasts are louder than stock, and have some degree of popping to an extent

Fixed the leaks and it is 100% better in the sizzing sounds but it is still a loud setup, wha wha, I know. I like to see Nature when I wheel and a loud truck doesn't see much.

I've never heard of anyone doing that but I'm sure it would quiet the exhaust and create more backpressure but then you would be spending twice the money on mufflers when you could buy one muffler that was more restrictive... but since you already purchased one muffler and have had it installed it would cost about the same to either replace it with another, or add another to the one already there.  :twocents:

extend the piping all the back to the rear bumper where it exits in the stock location, it will quiet it down a lot

I know lots of guys who run wraps on their motorbike headers, and they see ungodly high heat!  No warping either.  I hit my header one summer with an infrared temp gauge and was :yikes: at how hot it was.  Can't remember what the temp was now, just remember it was super high.

My exhaust has always popped. Popped w/ stock rusted stuff, popped w/ stock rusted stuff no muffler, popped w/ open LCE header, pops with LCE header, new 2.25 tubing and flowmaster muffler. No matter what its going to pop. I really love the looks I get with the open header though. Sounded like a baby v8!

Although ive got a built v6 and was thinking of going with 2.5 inch tubing, i instead went with 2.25.
It still gets a lil pop when coasting down a hill, but the extra back pressure and torque are well worth it.
