No way an open diff rig could out wheel a locked rig on 4-5 level trails, I don't care who's driving.

I've seen it done  :yesnod: Theres some pretty bad drivers out there....don't underestimate them!

or is it OVERestimate them? :headscratch:

In most cases though a 2wd, which is an unlocked vehicle in 4wd, will not go where a true 4wd or even 3wd truck would go. Unless your into the throttle with lots of power and running up or through obstacles on a 4-5 + trail your probably going to break the hell out of your rig.  We all know how bad open diffs limit your traction.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Score: 17 (out of 100)

Highs: Off-road ability

Lows: Ride, handling, braking, noise, fuel economy, fit and finish, visibility, frontseat comfort, access, reliability

More from CNNMoney.com

• Consumer Reports: The 10 best cars

• Chrysler: 'The best little car company in America'

• GM to Make Lithium-ion Hybrids in 2010

Consumer Reports performs off-road testing at its Connecticut proving grounds, but off-road ability doesn't factor into the final scores.

That's part of the reason the Wrangler Unlimited gets the lowest score of any vehicle the magazine currently rates.

"We're rating these cars as most people would drive them in the SUV category," said Jake Fisher, a Consumer Reports auto test engineer.

While Jeep boasts that it sells to more owners who actually drive off-road than any other brand, the majority still spend most of their time on pavement.

A spokeswoman for Chrysler pointed out that the Jeep and Dodge vehicles in this list were fundamentally engineered for heavy-duty off-road use :rofl2: and the Jeeps, in particular, have been rated highly by other publications.

That's awesome  :ha_ha:

OK this is comming straight from the 4wd Toyota owner mag September/October 2007 "Toyota Guru MARLIN CZAJKOWSKI"

(Marlin Czajkowski...)

" I wanted a smaller truck, and I loved Toyotas. From the very beginning, I wanted to get respect for toyotas," says Marlin. "that's what i was about. Back then it was Jeep, Jeep, Jeep, Jeep, Jeep. When I went on the rubicon I prayed that nothing broke, because I was so scared, I was about the only 4WD Toyota owner out there. I was in a group with 30 Jeeps, six Broncos, two Scouts, and two Toyotas. When one guy in the bowls had broken his steering box off the frame, I said, 'I can weld it.' I drove around everyone and when i pulled up and got out of the truck he said, 'You're not welding me!' I asked, 'What's the problem?' and he said 'Get the Japanese beer can out of here!' So I got back in my Toyota and pulled around him and kept on going. He was not going to have any Japanese truck owner welding his. Those were the old days."

Pretty cool

Why post that?  Maybe tell me of any company that produces an offroad street vehicle that isnt primarly used on the streets.

Even people that wheel their rigs if it still can be dd they will

How many of you have a 4x4 that you dd that dont spend more time on the road?

I still DD my truck, I highlighted it because there is so many mall crawlers... no no i take it back there are so many jeep mall crawlers everywhere that i thought it was funny and stood out of the paragraph. And the heavy duty part is funny too cause jeeps are known for heavy duty... ya right

Again my point exactly what percentage of rigs do you think get wheeled regulary or ever, you your neck of the woods maybe alot of yotes get wheeled and alot of jeeps see the pavement, out here I know tons of people who wheel jeeps, but I have only met one who wheels their yota.  (no Im not baggin on toyotas or their drivers)

Not to be a prick but some of you guys seem cool and down to earth but some of you got your heads logged somewhere it isnt meant to be, bitchin about others attitudes and how someone talks about you and your rig yet have no issue with doin the same about them....   (not aimed at anyone in particular just an observation through the thread)

MOST people at one time of another DD'd their rig, or still do..
But theyre just that, purpose-built rigs.

I see ALOT of average joe's that bought a jeep, spent some money on a lift at les schwabb and put some new 35's on, but rarely hit any trails.
True, some of them do have big heads and think the lift blocks and new m/t's will dominate over anyone.
Same goes for alot of fullsize chevy/ford owners.
Although, sometimes they go way too big and it just gets out of hand..

On the other hand, Ive also seen alot of Tacoma owners do pretty much the same thing, fit some 35's, and then never touch dirt cause its their DD and they dont wanna mess their pretty paint up, or theyre scared the e-locker button is really a self-destruct button.

We, the DD, hardcore, lay-your-:pokinit:-on-its-side-and-throttle-out-but-still-drive-it-to-work-on-Monday, are a special breed.
I take pride in the rock rash down my passenger side, cause its a memory of the fun i had on the con.
At stoplights, people look at it and cringe, while i smile...
You cant blame them, or the big-headed full-size, Chevy, Ford, Hummer, And Jeep owners for thinking theyre better.
They just underestimate the capability of what alot (not all) toyotas are capable of.
Imho, Jeep owners are the usually the worst because, as stated before, jeeps were the original wheeling machine.
All it all, I think it mainly comes down to name brand and loyalty.

You were technically DOGGING his jeep first, I dont have lockers and I would consider my jeep a pretty capable rig. Ive heard a few people say its the driver not the rig.  I would be willing to bet that there is some person out there that could outwheel you in a open diff vehicle just for the fact that they have more experience.

I would agree with you to a point, but there are trails that an open diff vehicle is NOT going to do, period. I've been told that I have that talent of getting a rig through a trail that it should have never been on and so does Tice, plus he has a rig that will climb walls. I've wheeled with him and he put his built rig places it should not have been able to get to or through.

Your absolutely right!  But until you stoop to the level of the majority of your fellow jeepers I got no problem with you or your rig skipnrocks. as soon as you say something about my rig that i don't agree with or claim that your jeep is better than any toyota ever made then your going to fall into the :pokinit: pile with the rest of em in my opinion.

       I guess it all boils down too........

Most "people" enjoy what they have/own, and naturally are proud of it even if its not what others think it could or should be.

I really love my jeep, on the other hand I love fearofrunners 4runner too.

coming from a jeep guy I think that toyota owners are very biased.. you toyota owners think we are..    im starting to wonder if we think the others are biased because were not taking flack from the people that own the same type of vehicles..

the question of the day is      I saw a 88' toyota pickup today with 22re for sale for 1900 im sure i could get him down a bit. its not for me but for my little brother that lives with me. he turns 16 in june. as for reliability I know it would be fine but is that a decent price?

If it runs good and has a good body it would be worth it. Just do a leakdown and compression check to make sure. As to being biased I don't know about that, just honest. :gap: Seriously though I don't know of any Toyota group/club that would tell a Jeep owner he can't come along on a run just because he's not in a Toyota, but I do know of a lot of Jeep organizations that refuse to allow anything but a Jeep product on a trail with them. That would also include other American vehicles that they won't allow on the trail with them, so I don't understand this Jeep thing.

yeah, i'm startin up a 4wheeldrive club and i am ALL ABOUT TOYS but anybody thats got a capable trail rig is more than welcome to wheel with me..... i'm just sick of everyone raggin on everything just because they think their      is THE     ...... brings me back to the point that its all about wrenchin, wheelin, and rebuildin! good times are good times only when you have a good group to wheel with and you can handle some criticism as to what you wheel, its just all part of the fun!!!! posers seem to be the ones that cause most of the havik...... the people that are true wheelers at heart have at least a decent amount of respect for other wheelers....

I fully admit to jawing at friends that have other makes of 4x4's but I'm just funnin', a capable rig is a capable rig regardless of the make, model or whatever makes it different. It's just playin' around, but some take it seriously and those are the people that are full of :pokinit:

Like uncle,I was a corona/celica nut,I bought a Chevy military 4x4 rig in 1977,I don't really like Landcruisers, they hadn't made 4wd pick ups yet,I was into the 18rc,before they brought out the 20r,then came the Toyota 4WD pick up,with a 20r,just my cup of tea,but they were new and expensive,I waited until I could afford a used one,I still have it and I would drive that truck anywhere,Jeeps are OK,once you put a 350 in them, chevy tranny, swap axles, chevy u-joints,driveshafts,I like their cup holders
