i have had many bad experience with jeeps. First off I used to own a jeep and it broke all the time, second every other jeep breaks all the time.  If you need to upgrade your axles and dump money into them to be legit to run 35's its time to look into something else, then there is the whole c-clip thing, who the hell thought of that?......... sick im running 33's and my tires is driving along beside me ripping off my brakeling nice? wtf... Mainly i have found jeep owners on the trail to be Cocky, dickheads, ignorant, retared, and just plain rude and rediculous.  Ask Kiyul4130 about his experience with me on that.   I could go on and on but it just seems that there is something about jeep owners going on with there brain

Last week after the trail run, I waited until I was at the first stop sign out of the park to get out and unlock my hubs.  A father/son Jeep rolled by and talked to me for a few minutes to make sure everything was O.K.

Teasing about make and model is fun, between friends.  If you do not know someone and you have an attitude about what vehicle they drive, that's kind of silly.

It's not the vehicle, it's the driver.

haha!!! this is a good thread! i'll never give up the toyota's and the only jeeps i'd ever own are the really old ones!!! Willy's seriously kick ass!!! but anyway, i've put my toys through sooo much abuse and somehow the ole girls never let me down!!! redlinin, burnin rubber, jumping, rock crawling and on a stock IFS no less!! my dad bought our 89 brand new and we put well over 350,000 miles on it, HARD MILESS!! if it werent for the black ice, she'd still be one the road today (RIP) but she's just gonna become a truggy!! my toyota's are loyal to me and i am loyal to my toys!!! if you gave me a jeep, i'd sell it right away and buy more toyotas!!! but hey, its all about your preferance, i think us toyota people tend to be a little crazier than the rest of them and have alot more fun!!! almost everyone i know wheels toys and its always a blast! even if you break :pokinit:, but thats part of the fun!!!  that whole jeep thing..... i dont want to understand, and thats why i drive toyota's!!!  :beerchug:

My #1 criteria is that it doesn't break.   I like Toyotas because they tend to be built well for what they are.  Sure, they're no Unimog or 6x6 Pinzguer or whatnot, but they are inexpensive and make for good daily drivers as well.  Jeeps have this fault, IMO, of being terrible daily drivers.   Well, maybe the Wrangler Unlimited is a recent exception.  But, they generally are something you build to go off-road and if you're building something for off-road only, why not use something that doesn't break quite as often for the platform?

I also like certain GMCs and Dodges, but they tend to be big behemoths and I'm not into huge trucks, personally.  Fords do well enough off-road, but they break on-road a lot and the interiors practically disintegrate after five years.  They also eat transfer cases with startling frequency.  IMO, the last thing I should ever have to worry about is the drivetrain unless I'm really abusing it to where it *should* break something.  But to see my friend with his Bronco go through three of them in 60,000 miles is just insane.   His ~2001 4Runner is still on its original transmission/xfer case and he takes it off-road all the time.

Nissan is also another good exception.  They make inexpensive off-road vehicles that seem to not break very often.  They just don't have the options and aftermarket parts that a Toyota has.  Of course, Toyota isn't perfect, either.  They have gotten too plasticky and too hard to modify, plus too expensive.

twistedtoy92

the newer ones are spendy and parts are highly sought after for the mini's!!! every vehicle has its weaknesses but you slap a few upgrades on a toyota and they will last forever if you dont abuse the hell out of it and do regular maintenance!!!  for the time and money spent on my toys and where they have taken me i will never buy anything else!!! i'd buy a new Dodge Power Wagon because those things really do kick ass but that would be more of a family/tow rig but still comes stock with 33's on 17's, rocksliders, dana 60 axles, front and rear Elockers, a 4:1 low range, and an electronic disconnecting sway bar!!!!  and yes, they come with a hemi! LOL!

A big part of this debate is the fact that Jeeps have historically been in the majority so everyone had the opportunity to meet a Jeep owner that was a jerk.  Are all Jeep owners jerks?  No, but everyones met at least a few that are (See Example Below).  Toyota's are on the rise and at times have trouble breaking into the Jeep "Club" that don't realize there is more than one possible brand of wheelers.  Don't get me wrong, I've met some Toyota owners that were jerks as well, but there are less simple because there are less Toyota's hitting the trails.

Example: The last trip in Moab gotrocks managed to blow a birfield playing on a rock next to the main road while I was airing down my tires.  While he was up to he elbows in grease a highly modified Jeep rolled up and made some "smart" comment about not having any spare parts that would fit a Toyota.  It was obvious that he was implying that his Jeep was the far better rig compared to a lowly Toyota.  Gotrocks was a bit upset since the Jeep didn't have anything left, other than the frame and body that were actually Jeep parts.  The Jeep was worth at least 10 times what gotrocks 4Runner was so what sort of idiot would make such a rude comparison.

:maddest:

I'm glad the majority of wheelers have more class than this guy did.

you can blame jeepers all you want, but firsthand ive experienced :pokinit: all the time here from toy owners..   saying that me buying 33's is a waste and i should buy 37's if I want to be a real 4x4. I guess me and gotrocks are in the same boat.. some of you highly modified :moon:s need to remember that we all need to start somewhere!

I find that it's mostly older versus younger.

See, back in the days, we had mostly stock trucks and managed to make due/survive.  Hell, if you could finish the 'con, well, that was a party and a half.  Doubly so if the thing still was more or less in one piece.

Now people seem to rely a lot on money and fancy parts instead of skill(though we love parts, too, in our case, it was because were were too poor or didn't have them at all - heh).   To them, it's a big ego thing.  To us, it was just getting home in one piece and having fun.  Or we had 4x4 because well, we needed it.(uncles' farms in Missouri for instance - it rains good and 2wd is as good as a boat anchor to get home)

ie - do you wheel to have fun and see if you can, or to show off and flex your ego?   I've seen lots of jerks, too - though most people are helpful and fun to be around.

x2 pete, you've seen my blazer and know just how ugly the thing is right now. has it ever stopped me from going out wheelin, havin fun, and trying all the harder obstacles that many of the high $$$ rig  driver's say i have no chance in hell of accomplishing? not a chance, i know my rig and its limits and will push em, back off when i know i have no chance of accomplishing it (hence the reason i havent tried waynes world or constrictor at 5 mile pass).

I know it happens on both sides, all I'm saying is that there are a lot more Jeeps on the trails so the statistics say that there will be more Jeep owning jerks.

personally, i like both. im more loyal to my toyota with 333,000 miles on it that still runs and drives. :gap: but when i was a kid we had a jeep, a CJ-5, it always needed work. we never could leave froa trip on time because something was always messing up. in the end it got sold when the towbar fell down and caught in the road and cracked the frame  . but i think ultimately its the driver that makes the difference. before i got my toyota i almost bought a jeep truck, those things are AWESOME!! the j-10s, and j-20s. i wouldnt mind getting one still and having a fullsize and a mini. also tow rig, more DD than toy would be. although i know that would piss some people off, and others would say its because the toy breaks to much, etc.. i love both, but currently im partial to my toyota. ive been in other yotes than have been beat on , hard, and still drive and work just fine. plus the toy seems to be a bit cheaper inintally, and to build up. thats jus me.

Most of my buddies run full size Chevy a few fords a couple of jeeps.  I ran Paragon a few years back in my dodge on 33's at the time and saw a guy in a toy with a SAS running with a bunch of jeeps.  I decided then I wanted a toy since so many other guys were driving jeeps.  When I got my first toy all my buddies gave me a hard time since I sold a 3/4 ton suburban to get my toy.  After wheeling a bone stock 83 toy on 35's two of my buddies went out and bought toys.  Now I have another buddy building a toy.  Personally I have heard lots of crap about what I drive but I have also given others lots of crap.  Its just among friends and we always help anyone that needs it.

Was it that bad when you went through it?  Maybe I'm not getting the full effect but I certainly don't see anything that would be a cause for WINCHING for the love of god :dunno:

See thats why when you buy a jeep, it comes with a free winch...  :joke:

Rocksurfer: Awesome write-up. you pretty much said it all..

Personally, i prefer toyota over all others because of reliability.
Ive seen toyotas with holes in the sides of the block so bad you can see the piston go up and down, still sputter, clank and bang to home.
How many jeep guys with the dreaded 4.0 have done that?

I think alot of us bashing on heeps comes from how many pavement pounder jeeps there are.
Around here, all the jeeps you see are so pretty its sickening.
Its like the owner pretty much dropped 25g's on a clean jeep and probably another 20 on the Comes-in-a-box lift, which they had "professionally" put on by some 4wd shop, and some lame 20inch blingin rims with procomp tires and a big matching polished spare stuck on the back.
Always polished, scared of puddles, basically giving jeeps a bad name.
On the other hand, a few friends i wheeled with on the rubicon last summer had jeeps that were beasts.
But in reality, there wasnt much "jeep" left on either of them.
Ones a full chevy rig built around an old willys body, and the others.. well the same thing, but with the original dana 300, and the grill.. thats pretty much it...

Also, I have to agree that it always seems that fellow yoter-ers..  :headscratch: are always friendly.
Ive ran into many a snoody stuck-up jeep club on the trail, going so slow its sad.
Yota fans always seem to want to make new friends, share a beer, and BS.. even if your not in a yoter..

Im a diehard toyota fan till the end.
Cheap,
Reliable,
And very off-road capable.

Cant beat that.  :dunno:
