Hey, I was just looking at the topic and it doesn't say anything about 4x4's.  Are you guys up for seeing some foreign toyota cars too?

Love the Toyopet and the Crown.

Another Toyopet. I am pretty sure a guy I know has one of these, IIRC he sent me the pic. Had it a long time. Seen him driving it around but have not been able to check it out yet.

Check this out. Its a Japanese Toyota fire truck. The two extreme kayakers imported it and run it on biodiesel. They fill the huge tanks in the back with fuel so that they could have really long range. They started in Alaska and went all the way down to the tip of S. America hitting all the wickedest kayaking spots. They stopped in Grass Valley a few years back to have my buddy Luke do some work on it at his shop 4x4 Labs. I Luke built the front bumper and did some other tube work on it. He had it a while. I think it was even 4WD.

That firetruck is cool.  It looks like the body is based on a G-Van, but the 1 ton wheels tell me otherwise.

P.S.  If you follow the link that is on the front bumper of it, it tells you a lot more about that project.

Nice. I hadn't checked it out. When my friend worked on it they hadnt started their journey yet I don't think. It was 2 or 3 years ago.

Sweet definitely check out those videos. I guess Luke didnt build the bumper but maybe he did some engine work. I'll have to ask him what he did to it.

I didnt know all the stuff they had on that thing. Pretty sick little adventure rig right there. I'd rock it!

So I was thinking that the company my wife works for has locations world wide and they do alot of shipping to and from CA.  So in speaking with an associate in South America she discovered that this guy is a 4x4 nut and is down with shipping a double cab 1st gen whole or in parts.  The wife said that it would be impossible to get a whole vehicle through customs and shiping parts through the company could be very bad if caught. But I am working on it.  This guy said the first gen yotas are not real common anymore due to severe rust, they are around but most are beat.

Oh man!!!! you probably opened up a big ol can a "I'll take one" when ever they get here. Heck if he could ship the cab alone and then maybe the rear doors. Those are the most important part. We can do everything else. I'm in for one(depending what it'll cost)

My thoughts exactly.  Ideally you'd figure out a way to drive down and buy one or some, but otherwise you'd really only need a complete cab to build a bitchin rig.

Actually, I have an extra cab to do just that if I REALLY wanted to. I think it's WAY too much work for what you get. I'd rather watch someone else do it or somehow acquire one of these 1st gen quad cabs and go from there.

For me the only way it would work is a rolling frame, cab & bed.  I am not into building off a cab alone.  The customs thing makes it impossible, even to ship just a cab.  It is possible to import a complete running vehicle but it must be brought to U.S. saftey and emissions standards by the importing agent so none of them will touch it.  A non running vehicle (no engine) can only be temporarily brought in as a display or demonstration item.  The best and riskiest solution for me is to ship a complete truck labled as the stuff they regularly ship then get the VIN# and title to a parted out U.S. Yota.  But again with all the homeland security stuff it would never make it.  I really think it's just a dream.

Did they have the diesel first gens down there too?  That might be the way to skirt around emissions.

Yeah. A few years ago I spoke with a guy on pirate who was trying to get double cabs imported from Japan IIRC. He said it was a nightmare, extremely difficult, and very costly to the point where it was not really even worth it. Ticket would be to find a Canadian double cab, I know those have been more easily brought into the US and made legal. Someone posted a pic of one legal and driving in the USA earlier in this thread. Same goes for the 70 series. There is a member on this board that has a couple of 70 series Land Cruisers and lives in the USA.

I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

toyota never released those models in the states and importing them as a complete running vehicle is extremely difficult.  Your best bet if you want one is to import peices of it and build it yourself, that is quite expensive though.

Us not getting those cool vehicles had and have nothing to do with the manufacturers of these vehicles, our beloved government put strict penalties, tariffs and taxes on them to keep them out since it would run the big three out of business. As usual it worked real good, they are almost out of business without any outside help at all.
