Hilux was produced on the "same" platform from the first models to 2005 when it was totally redesigned.  Until then it was just new bodies and evolution, evolution however meaning that hardly a single part was the same the first model and the lasts.  The best models where probably the live axle diesels from 1993 to 1997 (all gasoline trucks got IFS from 1989, and some diesel too).  I believe those models are also one of the most reliable car ever made (to simple to brake down actually )

4 latest generation Hiluxes have also driven to the South Pole, from a Russian base, that is located on the Antarctic coast almost as far away from the Pole as possible!  And yes, they have IFS up front   Experienced temperatures below -50 degrees Celsius (enough for pure anti-freeze to turn solid).

When I first compiled this post it was after arduous hours of research on the internet (my only real source for this kind of information). I would most certainly agree that the information provided here is nothing more than general specifications across the board. It blows my mind how much an automobile manufacturer can modify, tweak and change their models throughout the years and across different countries and markets. Therefore I included what appeared to be the most common non-USA models and their specs, rather than going all-inclusive, which is just beyond my attention span. I know for a fact that the Toyotas available in Argentina vs say New Zealand differ drastically in everything from aesthetics to drivetrain. If you spot any specifications that are outright wrong or need additional details, please let me know. I want this to be as informative and factual as possible, so any input from Non-USA residents (or USA residents in the know!) is greatly welcomed. The Toyota market in the USA has been/is incredibly limited compared to what is available elsewhere. Any additional information that can be provided to expand/correct this post, please share!!

Ok, few corrections.  Although I'm no expert on this I'm pretty sure I'm right on this
In a post labeled: Reply #3 on: February 16, 2008, 11:46:47 PM (page one):
"Land Cruiser 80 Series (imported to USA)

6 Cylinder 1HZ (gas), 6 Cylinder 1HD-T (turbo charged gas), 3FE Engine (gas), 6 cylinder 1FZ-FE (gas), 6 cylinder 5VZ-FE (gas), 4 cylinder 3RZ-FS (gas),  4 cylinder 1KZ-TE (turbo-diesel), 4 cylinder 5L (diesel)."

First, 1HZ, and 1HD-t are diesel engines, 4.2 liter inline 6 motors (two totally diffrent motors actually, the later one a 24 valve unit, one of the best diesel ever made).
Secondly I'm pretty sure that the v6 cylinder 5VZ-FE (gas), 4 cylinder 3RZ-FS (gas),  4 cylinder 1KZ-TE (turbo-diesel), 4 cylinder 5L (diesel) where never available in the 80 series.  They where available in the 90 series.  Also the inline 6 motors from the 80 series where surely never available in the 90 series (engine bay simply to short !).

Then few more details

The 100/105 series.  The 100 series had a IFS up front while the 105 series (generally called the UN cruiser up here) was simply a 80 series with a 100 series body on top (rather than a 100 series with a live front axle).  It had the non-turbo hz engine or the 6 cyl gas engine.

The 70 series. Replaced the 40 series in 1986.  It was introduced in two version, light and heavy.  The heavy unit had the old 40 series big diffs and leafs and big engines, while the light unit had hilux engines, 8" diffs  (high pinnion front) and coil suspension.  Then in 1989 all the 70 series got the 8" high pinnion front diff. The light unit then was replaced with the 90 series and then the 120 series and finally this year with the 150 series.  The bonnet was diffrent, the light unit having a sorter but wider bonnet while the heavy unit a longer and a narrower one (to make space for the 6 cyl inline motors).  Also few 70 cruiser, heavy type, came with a very unique diesel engine a 5 cyl version of the Z engine, called PZ.

The Hilux had live axle available until 1997 on selected models, diesel double cabs and single cabs.  Don't thing the extra cab ever had a live axle on post 1989 models, nor any gasoline model.  The live axle was improved however on the later models, that is came with the v6 diff and had vented rotors and 4 piston calibers.  A locker was never available up front as on the cruisers, but the electric locker was available in the rear.  The rear axle of the double cab had a load carrying capacity of 1.600 kg and the leafs had 4 main leafs and 3 load carrying leafs!  It was never famous for ride quality

The 200 series has a twin turbo 4.5 liter V8 diesel available, puking out 260 hp and 650 NM (480 feetpounds or whatever you callit )
The modern 70 series also has that engine but in that series it has puny 202 hp and mere 430 NM (317 feetpunds or whatever you callit ), which is nothing but an insult to a modern common rail diesel engine design.  But then again, more power and the allready rollover prone 70 cruiser would probably fall on its side just thinking about what it could do
The 3.0 liter diesel in the 120 series kicks out 173 hp and 430 NM, and that is also on the low side on modern standards.

the  1979-1984 1st generalion hilux in Australia were fitted with the 18RC petrol engine ro the L (2.2 litre ) diesel with a 4 speed gearbox
the 1988 -1997 3rd generation hilux in Auatralia were fitted with 22R petrol engine and 3L diesel then 5L diesel  where as Europe only had the 2L-II

I came very close to trying to get a roller sans engine/trans shipped through my wife's work as they import from south America often and her contacts down there agreed to help me.  As it is it is darn near impossible to get it through without paying an importer a heavy price and if going undocumented like I was going to try was too risky as they xray the containers.  I am still working on it and have an American in Guatemala looking to ship his car home so I may be able to get him to buy it and ship it as his, he has done it fairly hassle free in the past.  As of now it is a long shot but I want one bad.

Yeah, there was a thread about it on Pirate a while back. Basically it all comes down to being a major PITA to get one imported. That said, its probably a lot easier to get a Canadian spec than anything else.

I love that picture. I was actually born in Saudi Arabia (moved back to the states when I was 1) and my parents said that is a VERY common sight. Hiluxes with camels in the bed are everywhere in Saudi.

Yeah, I figure its worth a try. I know if I could go to the Dealer and buy a brand new 78 Series Troopy with a 4.5 V8 diesel and 5 speed.... I'd do it in a heartbeat. With Mahindra trying to get into the light truck/diesel market, I'm hoping Toyota will see this as a chance to bring Toyota diesels back to the states.

I know it's not a landcruiser, but I thought everyone on here would like to see it.  It's a custom hilux/surf combo that seats 7 pasengers comfortably and has a 13b diesel in it.

Haha that is awesome. Yeah I don't know what to expect from Mahindra, however I do know people that have used their tractors and speak very highly of them. We'll have to see. I know a lot of people are eager to get their hands on a light duty diesel truck so hopefully Toyota does something...
