Yesterday I went wheelin with a couple buddies, one with a 4runner, one with a S-10, and one with a Jeep.  I am not too fond of Jeeps as you can see by my quote down below.  Well anyway about a week ago my friends Jeep's (99 XJ Sport w/ 3" lift and 31's) rear driveshaft fell off and cracked the slip yoke.  $125 later it was back on the road, and just yesterday we went wheelin and the driveshaft fell off again.  The fix to this is a slip yoke eliminator kit which gives it a CV joint on the driveshaft, which Toyota gives you stock.  I thought I'd share this story with you guys to show how well engineered and built Toyotas are.  Happy wheelin

Try this one on for size, a good friend of mine had a 94 wrongler with 4" suspension 3" body and 35's.  He was basically racing in the mud and the rear slipyoke stopped slipping, the splines on the output shaft twisted and bound up the driveline.  He couldnt get it undone so he stopped driving it and was driving he parents rigs.  One day he was headed to work and was going to drive his moms zj but she had an appointment at a shop for repairs that day.  So he jumped in his stepdads 69 satelite, wouldnt start.  So he got back in his heep and was almost to the freeway and realized he needed gas so he spun it a around and went back to the station and was hauling arse to work.  (85ish)  When the rear driveline let go.  The drivline vibes took out the whole case.  It sat for a few weeks till he bought another case, we put it in with a new drivline.  First trip he took on the highway it let loose again!  So he bought another case and we put it in.  He was tightening the last bolt when he happened to glance at the trans, the bellhousing was broken all the way around with 1 bolt still holding it in place!  Im sure glad I dont have nearly the luck as he does!!!  Whats kinda funny about the whole deal is I was checking out the rear yoke and I thought it looked out of whack, he didnt wo I let it go.  After all was said and done he bought another yoke and side by side it had about 5 degrees of bend to it.  Damn I love being right.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

lowgeared

I have to admit that newer Jeeps suck.  You can't go wrong with a Dana 300 transfer case though.  Iron case and lower geared than my Yota....and bomb prooof.  Also a T-18a trans with a 6.32 first gear helps too.  I really thing OTT is onto something adapting a crawlbox to a 300.  I want to do this in mine.  It would really kick ass to have my 2.28 X 2.28 Marlin crawler adapted to a 2.62:1 Dana 300.  A low cost twin stick and no case disassembly to make it work.  Also 2low and front wheel drive.  That would give me an overall crawl of about 232:1 for another 500 dollar adapter.  Hey Marlin....are you ever going to make something like this??   :beerchug:

The dana 300 and dana 20 are the only good things on jeeps.  It is my opinion that to even get started on a Jeep rig you have to replace the whole driveline with chevy or ford parts.  The amc 20 is junk (though it can be patched together to hold up better) and the dana 35 is even worse.  People buy jeeps for the styling, period.  I look at it from a purely monetary standpoint.  Give me 2500 dollars and I can have a great yota or I could get started on a Jeep.  And I have owned both a yota and a jeep.

my buddy has a big ass chevy with "I dont understand that Jeep thing" with "jeep" upside down, as a sticker on his windshield, ha ha

95TacoTruck

I agree Toyotas rock thats why I drive them (only the best) however I had 2 different 83's and had problems with the drivelines coming loose on both trucks.  Then I was on the way back from a hunting trip with my uncle one night in his 83 and the driveline dropped then too.  I loved all those trucks but that sure got annoying quick.

Sounds like my luck with the auto in my 97 Dodge. Been to Aamco 4 times since end of Jan and cost 3 grand. Course Aamco is know for their quality workmanship. :smack:  Wish we had the flipoff dude. Aamco sucks!
Size doesn't matter... yet.

A good friend will bail you out, but your best friend will be sitting next to you saying "that was f---ing awesome."

WHITE_TRASH

A richy little b*std here in town had a 97 1/2 ton sport he had it in the shop at dodge 6 times because the trans was gone!  It didnt help that he had no idea what a breakin period was either.

A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

You must be a brainless fool if you want a heep. Well, the tranny went again, as of last night we're at 5 times and counting. I'll never get to build the runner at this rate. Damn fullsizes anyways.

Skinny_Pedal

i was with 81toy4x when that jeeps driveline fell off. it was good stuff cause we all got to make fun off him for driving a jeep, and that he had to put a 3" lift to just clear 31's. o those jeeps!
Im an OG

Dirt Mover

I think the wheelbase of a Toy is the biggest advantage. I wheel with some EBs and Jeeps that are set up, but when we get in big rocks they seem to need momentum to break over the top and thats where parts seem to scatter.

Personally I was planning to build a Jeep TJ before I got my Toyota pickup, but now that I have the truck I wouldn't trade it for anything.  I have noticed that my truck crawls up things much easier than Jeeps thanks to the wheelbase.

I guess the flip side is that it take a better driver to wheel a Jeep and due to the increased angles I suspect the "pucker" factor is increased as well.  Maybe Marlin should sell drivers seat patch kits for Jeeps?

I have driven my toy from Washington to Moab three times and so far I have not broken anything, while my friends wheel Blazers, Broncos and Jeeps that are usually towed in or driven short distances and most of them have some issues each year.  They are all impressed with the durability and ability of my toy.

I still drool over built Jeeps just the same as any other built rig.

I had a 71 CJ5. Never broke a thing. Like the Toy better due to more leg room.
Time to go wheelin!

That's what I can't stand bout Jeeps, there's no room, I get all claustrophobic riding in em..the dash is in my chest it seems

My buddy has an Xj and I think it is way more comfortable then a toyota I hate how toyotas are so layed down feels like yopu are sitting on the floor, the XJ feels more like a truck :moon:

there are rpos and cons to both imo say compare an XJ to a 4runner, (closest compro you can get w/ jeeps vs toyotas)

XJ pros: reliable 4.0 with good power(my buddys is faster then and 4wd on the hill and he has 60s)
decent tranny(very simular to RF151) and tcase(pretty good with SYE and 2.72 low range)
lots of room inside, 4 doors
always came with solid axle w/ 4link and coils, and efi
If you like autos their autos are not POS

XJ cons: axles pretty much suck stock
Unibody(really not the bad I have helped him do allot of work on it
             much more expensive to build
kinda expensive to get a low krawl ratio
hard to find one with a 4.0 and 5spd

4runner pros: reliable motor, tranny and tcase and axles, strong frame
super cheap to buy and build, top comes off, dont have to swap anything out to have an
extreme trail rig, like all of them had good 5 spds, a little lighter then Xj, bfields(is a good thing IMO cause of all the upgardes)

4runner cons: like 90% of them are IFS, solid axle rigs need and IFS steering box, stock motors make like
no power, some are carbed, doesnt have 4 doors( might be a good thing :dunno: ), not
quite as much room inside, birfields(is a bad thing when they are stock)

Imo you cant compare a 71 cj to an 85 or whater its almost apples to oranges

Poker in the rear

No it's just really crowded in em... I have like 6" of room between the front of the seat and the dash in my friend's TJ and about a foot in the XJ
