EZ tranny removal
« on: Aug 18, 2007, 11:04:21 AM »
I hate how Toyota decided to make the top 2 bolt that hold the tranny to the motor almost unaccessible. So made some holes :D
If you try this, make sure the speedo cable and the brake cable are out of the way. I used a 2'' hole saw for the holes and I will use roofers tape to hide the holes. :gapteeth:

45 minutes and the tranny was on the ground

This is why I tore the tranny out, smoked the clutch to many times.

I have one from Matco, I think it's 36". I also have a 3ft 3/8" that I got from Harbor Freight that works good to. I have been able to get those bolts from the top with a wrench.

The top 2 bolts aren't that hard if you let the rear of the tranny drop down..........

Screw some metal or rubber strap to the peices that you drilled & use a couple of sheet metal screws to hold them back in place. Seal it with some silicone  :twocents:

Red is the metal that came out
Black is a metal strap or rubber will work
White are the screws
Blue is the silicone

I use a 24" 1/2 drive extension bar and a 1/2 driv ebreaker bar THROUGH the shifter hole.
The ribs on the W56 bell housing guid the socket on to the bolts..
yeah yeah - still IFS...

To hell with that little hole, if you are gonna make it to where you can get to the bolts make a real hole.

I think all trucks should have removable tunnel covers. I like mine, I can drop the trans in 30 minutes including jacking it up and removing drive shafts.

I dont have a good floor jack or a floor for that matter. My driveway is #1 rock and when I'm working on the under side i use a old rug I got for free. the come-along was realy helpfull. There was no jack to mess with when wiggling the tranny into the clutch.

With as many times you have had to pull your tranny, you should buy a sheet of plywood so you can use a jack  :gap:
