Tranny removal problem
« on: Jun 06, 2016, 12:23:32 PM »
Yeah I know this is a dumb question and I'm sure most of you guys remove Trannys with your eyes closed, but here it is. This is the first time I am removing my tranny from my 85 4Runner with a 22re. I recently purchased it and saw that the oil pan was leaking so I removed it and saw that the rear main seal was bad. So I bought the seal and pulled all the bolts and I'm ready to pull it but I can't seem to get to the top 2 bolts in the bellhousing. I have read the stupid book but I can't find anything on how to reach thos bolts. Any of you have any tricks on how to do that? I even bought a tranny Jack hoping it would make it easy but nothing.  I'm used to pulling the trans off mi samurai and that is easy since it weighs nothing.

Thanks.

If you can't get up there with a socket on a swivel, with a 24" extension. Try using Jack under crossmember, remove bolts from crossmember, then lower Jack a bit, it should give you enough angle, I would throw a couple bottom bolts in before

So when I did this, I used a lot more extensions, and a couple wobbles, ended up having the impact wrench around the crossmember area... was pretty simple, could probably do it again, in a couple minutes

I have always been able to do as suggested above. Support the cross member with a jack, remove 8 cross member bolts, ease it down, wobble socket and 2' extension zip them top 2 right out. Then I pick it back up remove the rest, slide her back and ease to the floor.
