The problem im running into is i have a Frankenstein motor.  Its either a late head on a early block, or an early motor drilled/tapped for an EFI intake as well as carbed.  Wither way its an early block that doesnt have the knock sensor...

Either way the CARB program out here blows chunks and is only out for the almighty $$. As long as you have all the sensors in place and there are no check codes, it idles smooth and smogs clean your golden. Just do an extra tidy install job so they realize that you a) know what you are doing, and b) care about your truck so that they won't be approving a time bomb.

TURBO

hey Chris,

i know i've been back in forth on this issue, so i made a list:

this is what we know....

your engine...                                         your parts engine
GOOD THINGS                                         GOOD THINGS
has good (even) compression                     is complete
has been rebuilt                                       will pass visual inspection
has a new head gasket                             less work to install*
has a new timing chain
has new seals and gaskets
will accept efi intake & exhaust
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BAD THINGS                                           BAD THINGS
"frankenstein" haudge-podge built              Blown head gasket
no place for knock sensor                         unknown milage (cyinder wear, crank, valves ect. )
did not run when it was parked (carb?)       unknown life on seals, gaskets, ect.
needs to be dissassembled and inspected...
                                                           it's dirty... lol

* if we didn't have to replace the head gasket

so that b n said... if all we gotta do is put a nut on the side for the knock sensor... and accept the fact it's frankenstein and had a carb issue...
i say let's use your engine and put the EFI parts onto it...

oh and by the way the roundup is coming up in september

his spare engine thats COMPETE had what sounded like piston slap prior to warm up according to the previous owner I WOULD NOT put that block back into a truck without some consideration to that. his SHORT BLOCK, I think would be a better option with possibly the head off his long block?
IF these are still the blocks that came from my house
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

Turbo: I want to use my current engine, but sean doesnt want to because of the reasons you listed.  I like the fact that I know what has been done to it and what not.

BoG-ToY: We have acquired another engine since our encounter and that is the one we are looking at.  I was told it only has a blown HG and "may" have overheated as it was driving to its final resting spot.

I say lets call the Smog Reff and see if we can A. Solidly mount that knock sensor ourselves and get it to pass, and B. Use a toyota in-line fuel pump instead of an EFI tank.  If he says yes to both of those then sean probably will have fewer concerns about working with my motor.

*Ref called, pending answers to the above questions*

That was then Turbo... would you have wanted to do all this work on top of what we did b4?  Rebuilding the carb was the easiest thing to do @ the time.  Now that im faced with the choice again, id rather swap to EFI then pay to have it rebuild a 2nd time.

Haha, the good news, i think Doc is scared to do his...  ;) (JK Doc nothing scares you)

heck with a efi 22r swap. if its this difficult to do this im going to swap somthing that yeilds more than 15-20 hp. 4.3 chevy swap here i come. its essentially the same swap with a little extra fabrication for motor and trans mounts and a adapter for the ransfercase. but because of the way were doing the wiring you could swap any engine in our trucks the same way.

Sleeve of Wizzard

Crap this is getting to be a big deal, I say sell all the motors and extras you have and find a complete used efi  :dunno: P.S. you lose my number?

I will make it work.  anyone know what the pin out is of a toyota 1985 ECT (the control unit for a automatic)?  Thats where i am currently stuck.  Every wiring diagram i look at has no mention of it.

i beleive it's 2 wires u gotta jump together (neutral safety switch??)

basically tricking the ecu into thinking its always in neutral

thats the only thing i havn't done yet, (seeing that the truck is on jack stands with no t-case) :smack:  but i read on here that it is no biggie

TURBO

hey Caboose,
i think you should start taking your dash apart so we can combine your EFI harness with your 81 harness

I think I have an ecu for a 22re with a manual tranny if you need one?  :dunno: also there is a smog place on Divisadero and abby that does free pretests and is on the Level  :_oops: if you know what I mean.

Caboose

The research i found says that there is only one ECU in 85 for m/t ant a/t.  I just need a truck to reference to, that would make it a lot easier.

Edit: In reference to TURBO's above post, I believe we have narrowed the wiring harness down to an 86 TURBO a/t 4runner harness.  We believe the harness and possibly the EFI kit came from a late 85 turbo and that is why we are having trouble finding popper wiring diagrams for it.

Well many sleepless nights and countless seconds (seriously, think about it, who counts seconds?) have been spent on this truck.  The magical leprechaun has spend some time on my truck too.  I almost caught him one day, but he took off before i could run home to see what he looks like, but I heard the whine of a TURBO off in the distance while i was pulling up...

Anyway, you asked for the pics so here they are:

Rainy nights as well...

Oh, how we love our Denny's and open at all hours of the night for us weird folk...  (Special thanks to TURBO and Doc for their help)
