Is it getting hot in here?

It hit 99 or so today and I had no idea :headscratch:  I was out mid day running erands and getting groceries and it never seemed terribly hot to me.  A while after that I was outside shoveling and raking gravel in the yard and never felt "hot".  I was going at a liesurely pace cause well, I'm still on vacation and don't wanna sweat if I don't have to, but despite the fact that I sweat if it's over freezing I never noticed wet pits even :dunno:  And no, I wasn't dehydrated, my body tells me very quickly if I'm in need of water cause I'll get a headache and feel lightheaded.

That being said, I rarely run the cooler long enough to get the house cool, mostly use it in the evenings when it starts cooling off outside to even out the temp.  I can't stand going from hot to cold and back again, it's just hard on the body.  I run the ceiling fan all day and it's only about 81 degrees right now in the house, probably not much more than 10 degrees outside in the shade I'd say.

I'm almost getting bored now, might hafta go see if I can catch some catfish :gap:

yea it was 99 in Yuba today as well, didn't seem that hot until I got off work and jumped into my truck which was baking in the sun all day. Temp on the mirror said 111  :yikes:   and it definently felt like 111 on the way home until the truck cooled down.

We've probably had a dozen 100* days so far...but, it's a dry heat (11% right now)!

Yeah that sounds like here.  I think our humidity is about the same and we have also had a good handful of 100+ days this year.  I was just outside and when my truck first started up it said 116* and after I drove for thirty minutes it said 104* This weather does not bother me but it kind of sucks for my job as I work in a warehouse loading trucks for UPS.  It is typically 15 degrees warmer in there than it is outside.

Edit: Mrs.W, I lived in missouri for 2 years and I think humid heat is the worst, it makes you sticky the second you step outside.  However, sometimes my lips get real chapped and start bleeding from time to time which sucks.

Not that our humidity is great, but at least it's moist. I don't agree with the whole "but its a dry heat" myth.

Yes it makes you sticky but at least you have moisture. That dry heat was the worst thing I ever experienced in my life.
I guess it's an aquired taste. I'll take humidity over dry heat any day. That's like being in a convection oven, it cooks things that much faster.

The only good I will give it was when we were in the high desert with RS, when Mark got the big wedgie, and at least sitting in the shade did cool you down a lot. It would not have in our environment.

I don't agree with the whole "but its a dry heat" myth.

I don't think it's a myth so much as what you're comfortable with.  I personally prefer a low humidity heat, the only time I ever seem to really notice it's hot is if it's humid.  And I'm sticky as soon as I step out of the shower.  Even with the fan running and a decent temp I often start sweating while I'm still towelling off :ack:

I agree, you are definetly sweatier with humidity, no question. And I really enjoyed how well we cooled off just by stepping in the shade when we were at Calico with RS... but I did not enjoy looking in the mirror and seeing what my skin looked like with all the moisture being sucked out of it.
That was creepy.

Nate's gotten used to it.  Growing up, he always tore around at full tilt no matter how hot it got, and since then he's almost always worked outdoors.  Even though I grew up the same way (he's my brother...poor kid), I get the hell out of the heat when I can.  I guess the missus and I are more susceptible to it than he is.  To that end, we moved out of Redding almost three years ago.  Figured the rainy climate of western Oregon would be better for our sanity than the great armpit of California that is Shasta County.

Having said that, the dry heat of inland NorCal is infinitely preferable to wet air.  If the air is dry, shade and/or a breeze and/or a spray of water can cool you off in a hurry.  If it's humid, nothing you do seems to make any difference.

Luckily, it's typically 20-25 degrees cooler here than in Redding - currently 53F, 77% here, and 88F, 23% there, and that's at 11:00PM.  It never cools off there, but it seems like it never dries out here.  It'll rain for weeks, then suddenly warm up.  Even on a relatively cool morning, if it is humid, there is no drying off after a shower.  Thankfully, we seldom have company; standing au naturel in front of an oscillating fan at full roar, waiting to get dry enough to put on your socks and scungies, is an activity best not shared with others.

I'll take the cool temps, but if it dried out a little, it'd be nicer yet.  At least the cars both have nice cold R12 A/C.  Here, I can live happily with a black leather interior.  Wouldn't try that in Redding.

It's not a myth...ask Mark about evaporative cooling. The human body cools itself the same way as a swamp cooler. In a humid environment your perspiration doesn't evaporate as readily as in a dry environment and is thus less efficient at removing heat from your person.

on an unrelated note...did you hear Mr. Wizard died?

I sweat like a sleeper in church...even out here, it just leaves a white line wear the sweat was. Convection oven or steam kettle...I'll take the convection oven. Still, even though it's as dry as a nun's nasty out here, there is a problem with black mold! People freak out...it's almost like asbestos removal.

What exactly are you saying?

True, I go through some lotion (and Chapstick and Visene). The money I save spend on lotion is equal to the money I save from not having the launder 2 pairs of shorts, t-shirts and socks every day...you know the boys used to sweat back in Nashville! I can take a shower and still be dry...when I'm done toweling off. Also true, I bet I could slow roast a beef loin if I left it in my car all day. I know for a fact I can cook an egg on metal left in the sun too long (more than 5 minutes if it's chromed).

Being in the shade dropped the temperature, but also changed the dew point (I know I could make a joke here somewhere!)...making it easier for the sweat to evaporate.

So I just stepped out of the shower, started walking out of the bathroom and....crap, forgot to brush my teeth!  I step back in, begin brushing and glance in the mirror.....sweaty brow.  This was 10 minutes ago!

OK, yeah, you got me. The evaporative cooling is much nicer then stepping into the shade and still pouring sweat. And the dryness of my skin could have been as much from all the dust while wheeling as just from the dry air in general.

But we've been having our most excellent thunder storms around here again so they've been helping to keep things a little cooler. It's 70* this morning.

As I write it's 101* and 8% humidity with a heat index of 95*. We're not due for our summer rains, oddly named monsoons...sounds more impressive that way I guess, until the middle of July. I'll try to post some pics (they will not be MiniSimp quality)...the sunsets are nothing short of stupefying during monsoon season.
