« on: Apr 10, 2007, 11:06:45 AM »
How many people still run that tiny stock oil filter on their 22r/re that is :haha: smaller than a damn aluminum can??? I personally run the 1515 which is almost four times the size and costs about the same..... what the heck is up with that?  ???         :turtle3:

Let's consider that the 22R & 22RE are just about the most reliable engine produced on planet earth.  If the stock oil filter doesn't seem to be the limiting factor.  The main concern with the size is capacity allowing longer drain intervals.  If your changing at 3k or 5k OCI I wouldn't worry about it unless you have a sludge problem.  I fugure they are worth the $4.19 I paid for them at the dealer.

true, you have good points, but having an extra quart of oil capacity extends the life of oil (takes longer to break down thermolly) and more/ better filtration...... am i right?? but hey, thats why i started this poll to get everyone's opinion on the subject!!!

A larger filter doesn't always mean better filtration, it depends on the type of filter used.  If you want the best get a Amsoil Ea filter that has a very large capacity and great filtration.  I think there is a Mobil 1 filter that is excellent as well.

Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com for info from oil geeks.

At the present time I run the stock filter, but at my next oil change I will be going to the larger filter and remotely located.

I considered the Amsoil and Mobil 1 and opted for the Toyota Factory filters because they are cheap and easy to get.  Anything good enough for Toyota is good enough for me.  Interestingly enough, the same filter seems to go on nearly all Toyota's with the exception of the new 5.7L Tundra engine.  The guy didn't even ask what type of car/truck/suv it was for, just handed me a couple of filters.

My thoughts, if you have so much trash floating around in the oil you need a bigger filter, you have other problems.

NAPA.  It's a Ford filter, also common on industrial applications.

Yes, I run one.

napa # 1515   also fond on ford explores

I use K&N  filter

One thing U need 2 know about filters U get what U pay for  U buy a cheap filter U get a cheap filter.

also  if the filter says 10micron  its not 10    it will have holes bigger and smaller the 10.
Now if the filter say abslout 10 microns  then they are all 10

i actually use the ford brand.. they carry them at walmart, they are a lot heavier and their construction is strong than the typical fram crap..... it doesnt matter.... its the same stuff... ford has good filters....

it's fine... nothing wrong with them at all..... ive been in my engine several times, and there is no evidence of any harm..... my oil remains clean for a very long time, and i usually dont change the dino oil for 5k miles anyways....

there are a lot of myths about oil and filters and where you get things and how long to change the oil.... blah blah...... there have been significant tests to show fram filters are crap. but just about anything else is pretty good..

well 1 if your oil is staying clean thats not good  it means it's not doing it's job.
oil has 3 jobs
1. lubercats
2.cleans
3.cools

2.  The reason our oil gets black is it's cleaning all the crap from the moter  and suspends it in the oil.
if your oil dose not get black that moter better be new/clean enoff 2 eat off of.

If your OCI are low enough the oil may not change color and the filter may be containing the majority of the crap, but you are correct.  The oil color isn't an indication of its condition.

and fram is the worst, they suck and dont have a proper anti drainback valve

my engine is pretty clean, ive been through it soooo many times and rountinely run cleaners such as seafoam through it.....

my oil does get dirty after an oil change, it jsut takes awhile.....

Last I heard bitog wasn't even running a filter because he decided that better flow was more important than higher filtration.

In my opinion, running a larger oil filter gives greater filter area inside the filter that's exposed to oil, and in turn gives the benefits of higher filtration rates with the added benefit of a higher flow rate. It's a win/win situation.

I don't think the extra capacity is that big of a deal if you change your oil regularly, which I do.

I run a walmart brand Supertech ST16 filter on mine which is the same size as a fram ph16. However, the ST filters are made by champion and are actually of pretty high quality. And cheap enough to not feel guilty about my 3k mile oci's.

The reason our oil gets black is it's cleaning all the crap from the moter  and suspends it in the oil.
if your oil dose not get black that moter better be new/clean enoff 2 eat off of.

I believe the engine oil turns black cause carbon from the gasoline.  :twocents:

If your running CNG (compressed natrual gas) your oil doesn't turn black  :twocents:
