I really like what you are doing, but how much more space is it going to add?
As of today it's going to be 37" added on 1" back from the stock door jam edge (if that makes sense)

Here's the work from today:

So you are adding 37" to the current extra cab space, or in place of the rear cab window? The rear extra cab window is X in stock form, now your making it X + 37" or 37"?

I'm replacing the xtra-cab section with the 37" section i'm building. It's going be set up just like the photoshop, except after some measuring today it will be a little longer than shown, it's going to go into the wheel-well a few inches.

After some more thinking, added back on the rest of the front door jam and to straighten it out flat with the lower section

made a shape template

shaped up the rest

the plan has changed a little, I'm not going to be able to use the A-pillar sections like I was planning. I'm going to have to fabricate that stretch from scratch

I'm going to have about the same bed space as I do now with the tool box in the bed. I'm going to find a new place to put my tools & parts, maybe a drawer where the stock spare goes

You might want to wait to fabricate that roof/pillar section because the extra cab has a slightly higher roof as evidence by the larger back window.  If you go to buy a camper shell for these trucks, they always ask if you have a regular cab or extra cab because they want to get you a shell that matches the height of your roof.

i dont think that the roof is higher, it is because the back section of the cab is either straight (single cab) or slanted (extra cab). 1st gen 4runners have a higher roof than the truck cabs.

True.  Sounds like you've already thought it through then.

Yeah I'm accounting for that as I go. But you're right the roof is going to take some work to get everything to flow because it does have a gentle curve to the whole thing on an xtra cab.  There's a high chance that I'm going to have to re skin the roof on this whole back section to make the seam between the too cabs clean looking

X2, good work! I like the way you went about doing it...  I don't think I would have thought to bob the x-cab window out to create the same as a single cab...  Looking good...

finished up the jams on both sides

squared up the front and braced it

cut the cab but didn't get all the way through all the supports and didn't have any sawzall blades on hand

picked up some blades and will try to get the bob tacked back together tomorrow

does anyone know if the gas tanks on 1st gen runners are not as tall as the tanks in 2nd gen pickups? thanks

Talon84x4

only got a little done today, was a pain but finally got the back off

then as soon as I started to clean up all the edges to tack the pieces back together my grinder died. I've been babying that thing along for a while now, have had to rewire it a couple times and was on it's last leg. If anyone has some good experiences with grinders in the 4/4.5" range let me know, I'm going to be researching and picking up a new one next week

This is all I have for now, I've got a full work schedule tomorrow through Wednesday so won't have anything new for at least a week

For the record, This build is ill.    :usa:

jimbo74

are you grinding or cutting? i love my harbor frieght grinder... apparently, there is a hd version of it that doesnt die and thats what i have, others have used the other hf on and it has died out.....

if you are cutting, and you have a good size air compressor, you should get a cutoff wheel, i love mine

I use if for everything, grinding, cutting, and sanding. It was a HF grinder, it had a good run and much better than my last one. I'll have to look into an HD version.

I've got an air cutter but don't like it as much, the radius of the cutoff wheels are too small for me and wear down too fast on the stuff i'm usually cutting. For little detail cutting it's great but I rarely do projects that size

pumkin toy

how much are you lookin to spend on a grinder?  I have a milwakee that i use at home.  I think its a 6 amp.  its got quite a bit of balls and works real well.  If you really want to hit the big time, buy a Metabo!  we use those at work every day, all day long and they kick ass.  I think they are 10 amp, but they are about 350-400 bucks, so thats probly not in your price range
